Question about 1994 Ford Probe

My 1994 probe auto trans when it changes into 3rd gear flares

& loses drive .It goes fine in 1 &2 gears .

    i had the trans rebuilt. hardle driven since i was deployed at the time.it shifts great when cold or cooler out as soon as it get warm it shifts horrible. I was told possibly something with tha lines might need to be adjusted

First, Thank you for your service to our great nation.

Now have you spoken to the person that rebuilt the transmission, explain why you were not able to bring it back to him right away, ans see if he is willing to work with you.

If not then remove your filter check to see if there is anything that looks wrong. change the filter and replace the fluid with a good synthetic like royal purple. I hate to say this but with transmissions there is not a lot I can walk you threw, I don't even do any work on mine accept for the filter and fluid. Make sure your vacume lines going to the transmission are all in good condition, they have some control of when your transmission shifts, you could just have a bad vacume line.

Transmission flares

DATE: 2-25-2003
MODEL: MY 2001-2002 S60, V70, V70 XC
SUBJECT: Shift Quality Issues due to B4 Servo Cover Failure, 2-3 upshift harshness or flare
CHASSIS: These chassis breaks are approximate:
S60: 062000-152000
V70: 116000-230000
V70 XC: 036000-067100
TRANSMISSION SERIAL NUMBER: The first 3 digits of the serial number on the affected transmissions will be between 01C (March 2001) and 01L (December 2001).
DESCRIPTION:
In the AW 55-50, brake number four (B4), is only applied in 3rd gear. The B4 is applied by a piston, which is covered by an aluminum cap. This cap has a steel washer crimped to its inside surface, and a rubber cushion that sits between the cover and the washer.
If this washer breaks free from the crimps it will become concaved because of the B4 piston return spring pressure.
This loose washer can cause: - " 2-3 upshift flare / slip - " Harsh 2-3 upshifts - " 3-4 upshift flare / slip - " Harsh 4-3 downshifts
Replacing the broken B4 cover with a new one (PN 30651771) will remedy these symptoms.

My GMC has 311632 miles on it. I just changed the 4L60E transmission a few months ago and now it wont shift out of first unless I manually put it in second gear. all the gears from park rev. nuetral works...


The transmission may be in Limp mode. The transmission is on the same fuse as the MAF, O2 sensors and at least one other sensor - if an O2 shorts out, it will blow the fuse and the trans will go into limp-home mode. Be sure the trans has power and the fuse is not blown before doing anything else.

What is "limp-home mode" ? This is a fault mode in which the transmission either loses electrical power or the PCM deactivates all of the electronics. The transmission will default to max line pressure. The driver will have Reverse and 3rd, with manual 2nd available by putting the gearshift in 2 or 1 (doesn't matter). 1st, 4th, and TCC lockup will not be available. It will not hurt the car to drive it like this for short periods, but use manual 2nd to get the car moving, and be aware that the trans will generate more heat than normal while operating in limp-home mode due to increased torque converter slippage during 2nd gear starts and no lockup in 3rd gear.

Trans does not upshift out of first, speedometer reads zero at all times: VSS failure. Easy fix on rear of transmission, but xmember must come out to access VSS.

Car goes into gear but feels very sluggish like the brakes are dragging, but it will roll easily (starts out in 4th gear), you manually shift to 2 to get it moving, once it's moving you put it back in OD and the car shifts 3rd to 4th on its own and locks the converter at the appropriate time: ShiftB solenoid failed: Easy fix in the pan. Or a wiring problem from PCM to trans.. or PCM.

No 1st or 4th available; trans shifts 2nd to 3rd by itself in D or OD and locks the converter : ShiftA solenoid failed. Easy fix in the pan. Or a wiring problem from PCM to trans.. or PCM.

Transmission does not shift automatically, only manually. Swap in a known-good PCM, check wiring, check other sensors such as VSS and TPS.

3rd gear starts, can manually shift through all gears. When car has been turned off for a bit, then back on it will run normally.: VSS dropoff w/ Hi-stall converter. The rpms are too high, but VSS is showing no movement. Happens after a tire burning take-off. Doesn't store a code, will not throw a CEL (I've heard that it will store a code if it happens 3 or more times). Cure: Reprogram PCM for VSS dropoff -- PCMforLess knows about it.

1995 Mercury Villager automatic gearbox problem.


does it start in neutral and park? if yes, linkage should be ok. The trans has it's own computer. you can buy used for about $50 from EBay or car-part.com

My automatic focus sometimes will not go into gear properly


This may be caused by fluid starvation from a plugged trans filter, also a shift solenoid inside the trans may be sticking, I would recommend u change the trans fluid and filter (required at 60,000 miles), also go to a Kragen auto or any chain parts store like it and ask to have a code test run on the powertrain control module , it is free.
