Question about 1992 Buick LeSabre

1 Answer

Transmission will intermittently not shift

This problem seems strange to me. The transmission filter and fluid have been recently changed. The car was having a problem, on occasion. Not all the time. The service engine light comes on and the transmission seems to be in fail safe mode, sometimes it won't shift at all and have to park it. Later, it will start up and go like no problems at all. Then, in a few days it will happen again. So, I have parked it. Had it checked and was told that the internal and external computers are not the problem. That the transmission needs to be rebuilt. Any ideas?

Actually, there is a vacuum line that had come apart and blew transmission fluid all over the place. It happened on my way to work and when I got there, the guys rigged a rubber piece to fit the line back together and filled the fluid up. It has had the problem I mentioned above, since that time. I told the mechanic that I took my car to, and he clamped the fitting on both ends so I assumed that it was not the problem. However, it has had the same transmission problem ever since. Now I am prompted to change out the modulator valve before paying to pull the and switch out the transmission. My car is in such good condition and has been maintained up until this transmission problem. It did drip a little fluid on an ongoing basis but not enough to worry with, I carried a quart with me at all times and checked it often. I will run the car today and see if the level is still good when it is hot, as you suggested. Thanks-Carol

After driving it a while did you check the fluid level, the filter will absorb a good amount of the fluid and even though you put the recommended amount it may need a little bit more. It sounds like to me that it may not have enough fluid to create the necessary pressure to get the gears changing. The fluid gets thinner as it heats up and loses the ability to create pressure in the transmission. Were you having a problem before that prompted the fluid and filter change that perhaps wasn't fixed by the change?

Code po768. Solenoid is this a transmission problems

A P0768 code means that the transmission is not shifting when the computer expects it to. Possible causes could be dirty transmission fluid (fluid and filter need changing) or simply low transmission fluid.

If your fluid level is correct and if it is clean, then it's likely that there is a problem with the shifting solenoid.

However, keep this in mind. If the error code was caused by a one time problem (e.g. towing a heavy load up a high or steep hill), it's possible the system is telling you the transmission did not shift as expected. To determine if this was an intermittent problem, you can clear the code and see if it reappears. An intermittent problem will also cancel itself after a certain number of starts if the problem is not detected again.

Cannot find place to fill transmission oil

Don't know about your car, but a VW Rabbit I recently purchased has to have transmission fluid checked and filled from underneath the car. Seems to be the way of European transmissions. A pain and expensive. On mine, if you have a leak repaired or fluid added, make sure they change the filter, too.

How much transmission fluid does it take when changing the transmisssion screen and filter?

When the pan is dropped and fluid is drained, to refill, it usually needs 5 - 6 quarts. When refilling, check the transmission fluid dipstick as you are adding the last two quarts. And also run the transmission thru the gears.

CHECK TRANSMISSION FLUID LEVEL FIRST BUT IT SOUND LIKE YOU NEED A FLUID AND FILTER CHANGE IF TRANSMISSION FILTER STOPPED UP TRANSMISSION PUMP CAN DRAW FLUID THROUGH CLOGGED FILTER.WHEN ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION GET HOT FLUID WILL GET HOT AND THIN ENOUGH TRAVEL THROUGH FILTER SO CAR CAN SHIFT INTO OVER DRIVE.DO A FLUID AND FILTER CHANGE SEE WHAT HAPPENS.

Thanks for choosing FixYa and welcome to the site. If I was you, I would go ahead and change the transmission fluid and filter. The bubbly fluid may be a sign of water or moisture. If it was driven with little fluid, there may be damage. I would inspect the outer part and check for leaks. Slipping when you first pull out could be a sign of low fluid. Then again, you may have transmission issues. If it is possible, try to get codes off your computer. If not, I would change the fluid and filter to see if that helps. If it doesn't, I would advise you to see a transmission shop.
