Replace egr valve

I had to replace my egr valve on my 2001 Buick. My service engine soon light came on. I took it to an auto repair shop and they put it on a scope and it showed the egr valve was bad. They replaced it and driving home my light came back on. I took it back and they then told me the new part had to be reprogrammed in order for my service engine light to not come back on. Is this true?

Your 2001 Buick has digital linear EGR valve, and should be able to be replaced and the SES light cleared. When the conditions are correct, while driving, the computer will open the EGR valve and watch inputs from the valve itself, as well as the MAP sensor, and Oxygen sensor to verify proper operation of the EGR valve. There is no reprogramming required to change an EGR valve on a 2001 model year Buick. General Motors may have a re-flash available to correct an EGR issue, and sometimes they recommend this re-flash with a new part. I checked my sources for you and could not find any TSB (Technical Service Bulletins) that are associated with EGR valve replacement, or re-flashing of the computer to correct erroneous EGR codes. Regrettably, it sounds like you have an issue with your mechanic, and POSSIBLY a misdiagnosis. Hope this helps!

If the replaced the erg valve and the light came back on, you still have a problem, probably different then what they fixed.

A New EGR Valve Changes Parameters for ECM readings so YES its Likely they had to Cause the ECM to "RELEARN" New Parameters after new EGR was Installed. Although this Probably Should have been Explained to you BEFORE The Service In MY OPINION . Hope this Helps If so Please Rate Me Fairly Thank You And Have a Great Evening

Yes this is true. The only way to get the light off is with a hand-help diagnostic computer that the auto shops have, Or you can buy your own OBD2 code reader

I meant how do you replace an egr sensor in a 2005 rendezvous?

A faulty egr would not create a high idle issue. if an egr valve were to open while idling then it would create a heavy stumbling engine or it would die right out. if there is a check engine light on (or service engine soon light) have the codes pulled. Failing that then I suggest taking it to a reputable shop

Sounds like a fuel pressure problem. If the light was on it still has the code stored in the ecm. A good shop can check the code and fuel pressure.

Yes, take it back. The might of replaced the Egr valve to turn off the light. Don't let them charge you for retesting it, that's why you took it in in the first place.

unhook the battery for ten minutes and hook it back up... that will clear the code... if your stereo requires a code make sure you know it first.
