Question about 2002 Ford F250 Super Duty SuperCab

1 Answer

OD button works only part of time.

OD button only active ocasionally so Overdrive disable and light only work occasionally. Moving the gear shift sometimes makes the circuit work especially around the drive position. . I havn't really had to diable overdrive but in case I sure would like to know how. I thought I had a problem in the column and almost got got plastic off columln but couldn't get the key guard off so could not get top plastic off. I don't know trick. Notice the last time things were funtioning correctly that moving the gear thru drive made the thing work correctly. I assume there is an enable switch somewhere in the column that makes the disable switch active and is in trouble like not making contact. ???? Help please Ron

Back in 2009 I discovered a high failure rate with the OD diasabe button on these trucks. I posted somewhere a step by step procedure for replacement of this switch (button). That solved the problem. Was about a 30 Min job and all was well again. If you get intermittent OD light then this is what to do: REPLACE THE SWITCH.

There's no enable switch as far as I know, it should light up in any gear position when you hit the button. I'm guessing there's a problem with the wires going to the switch, probably broken somewhere in the column and make contact in certain positions. You may have to pull the ignition lock to get the cover off. If I recall that model right-remove lower cover, there's a little hole in the lock body with a small steel pin in it, turn key to ON and press the pin in with something and the lock will slide out. When you reinsert the lock just turn to off and the pin will reset itself to the locked position. You'll have it apart for a while with the ignition on so you probably probably want to disconnect the battery.

Have the vehicle scanned for trouble codes, and diagnose any codes present. If no codes,or as an alternative,i have at work a Zoom Technologies box that allows me to monitor transmission function as being commanded by the vehicle's PCM,or manually override the vehicle, and take manual control of the transmission. It is an expensive diagnostic tool.If the trans is commanded manually, and 4th gear doesnt happen, then you're looking at electric solenoids on the valve body,or possibly damaged servos.Servos can be accessed with the trans in the vehicle, and inspected. If the servos aren't the culprit, then it is likely an internal problem.

SOURCE: 2005 Ford Escape XLT 4WD - Overdrive light blinking...

The overdrive light blinking means that a fault code has been stored in the computer, this can be for many different reasons. The car isn't actually turning overdrive on and off, it is just a way to alert you of a problem. Getting the computer scanned will provide a fault code eg. P(XXXX) if you can get this code I can help you further. -Jared

SOURCE: f150 transmission neutralizes when shifts to overdrive

I have that exact same truck and transmission and My Transmission did the exact same thing about a year ago and there was some kind of snap ring inside the transmission that broke. I originally thought it had to be an electirical problem because the truck shifted fine until OD or if i turned OD off. The 4r70w is a light transmission and i would suggest you have a shift kit put in and they make a heavier kit to beef it up.. Sorry its probably not the new you were looking for.

SOURCE: transmission on a 1983 f100 with a overdrive

The best way to adjust it is to hook a pressure gage to the TV pressure port located on the left side of the transmission just ahead of the linkage. You want it to be a zero at idle but pressure starts moving as soon as you move the linkage.

Overdrive will not engage.

Does the car have a button on the shifter handle somewhere to disable overdrive? Also, there is a plug on the transmission that must be plugged in to engage overdrive so check to make sure it is plugged in correctly.

Overdrive not working when press the overdrive button on the motorway and the indicator lights not working

You don't use that button
You leave it & all vehicles that have OD switches
in a position, so all gears can shift on their own
You got the button, the wiring, the od solenoid in the trans
and you got internal trans issues
You have to find the problem
If the trans has not been rebuilt in 15 years
or the fluid never changed every 3 years or so
them the outlook is not so good
May be best to seek help at a repair shop or try
a new solenoid.

I need to know what is the proper use of the O/D off button

Typically Overdrive is engaged when cruising, when the car is in top gear. Whether the activation button is on the dash, or on the gear selector, makes little difference to how the Overdrive system works. Pressing it will disable the overdrive. Personally, I have left the OD on in every vehicle I have owned at all times. If left on it will only engage at a certain RPM (highway speeds etc.). I hope this helps and good luck. What are these buttons for? e t c drive & side of shifter

The ETC switch is a transmission control device. When it is not active, the transmissions shifts normally. When the ETC is engaged, it alters the shift points.
Example: the 1-2 upshift occurs normally between 18-20 mph. Now, say you are towing something, or are carrying a heavy load...engage the ETC, and the trans computer will "hold" the 1-2 upshift until 22-24 mph. It is just for that, prolonging the shift points, due to load.

The switch on the side of the shifter is for the Overdrive. Engaged (the OD light is off) the transmission shifts into overdrive. This saves you gas. When the button is dis-engaged (the OD OFF light is on) , the transmission does NOT shift into overdrive. It is best to leave the overdrive ON, and the ECT OFF to obtain maximum fuel mileage. I hope this has answered your question. Please feel free to comment back if you have any other questions. Thanks for chosing FixYa for assistance.

A light on dash saying o/d off came on

There is a small button on the gear shifter. This is the OverDrive switch. When the button is depressed "IN", the overdrive system is active, and the light on the dash is off. When the button is OUT, the overdrive system is de-activated, and the light on the dash is illuminated. The OverDrive is basically the final shift of the transmission, which gives you maximum fuel economy. When the light on the dash is ON, the OD is "OFF", the transmission will not make its final shift, and will lower your fuel economy. It is best to leave the button IN, and have the OD system active. Hope this helps, and Thanks for Choosing FixYa. The graciousness of a "FixYa" rating for my solution would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for allowing me to help you with your issue.

Volvo 240 GL Transmission

You have an overdrive relay issue. The tansmission is really a four-speed box, but the OD selector either locks our fourth gear or allows the car to shift normally into fourth. I use the OD on my volvo all the time, because the revs drop in half when the OD is activated, The relay is located behind the glove box, toward the center console. $10 buck on Ebay and your transmission should shift correctly again. I would try that BEFORE more expensive fixes, like OD solenoid $200 or transmission control module. Just for kicks a picked up a spare ECU on Ebay for $10 because these get costly if and when they go. Easy fix, though, a couple of plugs.
