1995 Ford Mustang GT 5.0 starting problem

The car will not start 2 times out of 10 (or something like that) and will occasionally shut off on its own when driving on the freeway. I was leaning toward spark plug wires however I noticed that problem does not occur when there over 1/2 tank of gas. Could be ca oincidence but I'm not sure. Any suggestions?

Had to replace the fuel pump, problem solved!

  • ericlilly5 Feb 18, 2009

The line was ok but the fuel pressure was low. Replaced the pump and I have not had the problem since.

Ended up replacing the fuel pump and the fuel pump pressure regulator in February and that seemed to have solved the problem however the problem has started again. Now I am really stumped. Any suggestions?

Check for fuel pressure when it happens, sounds like a bad hose between pump and metal line inside tank.

Why does a 1995 foed mustang gt just stall and wont restart.

Very late but for anyone else with this problem. I used to have this occur when I drove around for a bit. I'd drive and after 5-20 mins the car would just stall on me. It wouldn't start immediately and sometimes just waiting an hour or 2 and trying again made it start and drivable for a few minutes again. The problem was the ignition coil. I spent over $1400 changing parts to find out it was an $18 fix and took 10 mins to swap out. If the rpms do jump around a lot then yes the stator would be the problem. If it just stalls even while driving, it's the ignition coil. If neither, test the voltage regulator. Hope this help. Happy driving!!

Crank but won't start

You'll have to figure out if it is a fuel or ignition problem.
Is the check engine light on ? Have you checked for trouble codes ?
It could be a relay, the ignition module, coil, fuel pump, or a list of other things.

check the rear of your trunk driver side like if your going to change rear brake light do you have a gas override switch wich starts the gas pump its a restart button you have to remove the panel as if your going to take off tail light on driver side rear its an emergency shut off.

The speedo in my 95 mustang Gt Is 10 miles an hour fast

A vehicle speed sensor that is starting to fail could cause this, or less than likely bad wiring or connections, or yes, a bad cluster could do this... But how exactly did she notice the speedometer was 10MPH fast?? There are no real accurate speedometers in vehicles (Don't get me wrong they shouldn't be off by 10MPH) but there is a 5 or so percent difference high or low in many vehicles even with stock powertrains. I've plugged in with a diagnostic scanner on many vehicles and the dash speedo shows 60MPH, but the electronic speed readout on the scanner reads as low as 55MPH or as high as 65MPH
