I thought the oil was leaking from my oil filter. I changed the filter and the oil still leaks. It seems to be coming from the unit that the oil filter attaches too..Is there a seal between this part and the engine? What is the proper name for the part the oil filter attaches too? I lost 4 litres of oil in a matter of minutes.
It is your oil cooler with out a doubt, and most likely all you do need is an O ring its a simple fix. For how old the car is it became brittle and needs replaced, but hopefully (which there is a slim chance) but your oil cooler could be cracked but again its very unlikely. And make sure you do not drive the car. You can seriously damage your engine this way.

did you make sure to remove the old oil filter gasket before putting the new one on cause sometimes they stick on there,check your old oil filter if it has the rubber gasket on it or not,and drain 1 quart out of the oil plug if you put too much in or you will blow oil seals
1996 Passat TDI had 2 oil leaks at separate times. Both turned out to be leaking oil pressure sending units on top of filter bracket. Could not see either one leaking until someone got in the car and reved the engine. Simple fix for me once found.
its called an oil filter housing adapter gasket, very common problem for it to leak it gets disturbed from the torque applied every time you change the oil filter just not a well thought design it will appear that your oil filter is leaking however it is the 10 dollar gasket on the adapter that gave in
Maybe, maybe not, It's most likely a bad rear seal or worn main bearings but check the oil filter just to be safe. Sometimes things go wrong when changing the oil filter that can cause similar symptoms.
1) old gasket left behind.
2) cross threaded filter.
3) loose filter.
4) damage gasket or defective new filter.
I have a 1997 jetta and have been through this. Go to the volkswagen dealer and have them pull up the oil cooler housing. You will see a gasket (o-ring) that seals the two pieces of this housing together. Buy that. Your old one has gotten brittle from years of extreme temperature swings and cracked ( it will be like hard plastic when you remove it.) Unscrew your filter, take a 27mm socket (prob need deep well) and unscrew the nut at the top of stud where the filter screws to. Take it all the way off and remove the old o-ring. Clean the area well and put your new oil swabbed o-ring in and reverse the above steps. 30 min 8 dollar fix. Good luck!
