Noise coming from front differential

We have a whining noise coming from the driver's side front 4x4 axle.

Chevy 2002 2500 series, 4x4 will not engage, when shifted into 4wd a kind of grinding noise comes from the front like gears are not meshing.


No hubs on 2002 Chevy 2500. I'd check the front axle actuator (engages front axle when 4WD is engaged). Belive it's on the passage side axle tube of front differential. Could be wrong, but that's what it sounds like. Or the front ring/pinion is shot. They don't turn when not in 4wd.

Front end rotation noise


It should have been thoroughly checked. Noises like these on four wheel drives could several different things. A bearing, CV axle, or the differential, or bearings in the differential. A wheel bearing will make different sounds when making a turn. A CV axle is a constant sound. Differential bearings can come and go, depending on if it is a bearing for the axle or a pinion bearing. Axle side bearings usually make a constant noise. The differential can also come and go. Depends on acceleration or slowing down. All these sounds are also with a vibration. Slight to harsh.

Front differential subaru


Check for the axle of the side from where the cutting noise is coming. Axle is mainly responsible for the cutting noise. Or you can check for the camber angle of the tyres.

Sounds like bearing in the front of my 1500 chev in four wheel only lound whine


If it whines when in the 4x4 position but not at any other time then the noise you hear may be coming from the transfer case and is caused by the high gear load of driving both axles on a this type of surface. If you are driving in the 4x4 position on any dry hard surface you will hear some noise from the transfer case and usually it is a noticeable whine. Also, driving in 4x4 on a dry/hard surfaces greatly adds to the strain and wear on the power train. It would also be a good idea to have the both axles and transfer case fluid levels checked to be sure none of them are low. Hope this helps a bit and good luck!

This could be one of several problems: If the noise increases with speed, and you are only hearing it from the rear differential and not the transmission, it could be the rear differential carrier bearings, or rear axle bearings going bad. If you are only hearing the noise upon acceleration or deceleration, the rear differential ring and/or pinion gears may be going bad and the rear differential will need an overhaul. You'll have to get the rear wheels off the ground and see if you can pinpoint the location of the noise with something such as a stethoscope. If it's coming from the rear differential, you'll need to pull the bolts and the cover to determine if the gears are still in good shape, or if there is any pitting. Same with the carrier bearings; if you see pitting/ discoloration, they'll need replacement. If the noise is coming from one side towards the end of the axle shaft near the wheel, it's most likely a axle bearing going bad, and you'll need to pull the wheels, remove the diff. cover to release the C clip which holds the rear axle in place at the differential, and pull the axle out. You also need a special tool with a slide hammer to remove the axle bearing and seal.

2003 chevy suburban front axle noise


Worn side bearings is where the noise is coming from and might as well do both sides, I used replace them in about 2-4 hours, depending on where Murphy happened to be. Disconnect both side inner CV joint, front prop shaft and the 4X4 actuator line. If you want to drop the front pumpken. Not sure if you have enough room if you want to change the bearing without removing the pumpken from the frame. You should see when you disconnect the CV shaft.

The front diffs are toys compared to the rear, if you use auto4wd too much there are bearings in your tranfer case that are similar to the side bearings in the front diff. In both appearance and durability and soon you'll replace those too.
