How to disable auto door locks on 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo

The door automatically lock at 15 mph. Is there a way to disable this?

  • Anonymous Feb 03, 2013

Hey Jerome. I use this vehicle for working in the field. I am always needing to open the rear of back door for specific tools of my trade. It\'s a pain when I need to open one of these doors and they are locked. I am 60 yrs old and no kids ever ride in this vehicle. Thanks for the response. Barry

You can check fluid level by removing the rubber plug in the cover. Fluid is full when on level ground, it is just at the edge of the hole (or very close) if you are already getting noises out of there, you can remove the cover and inspect gears for wear or breakage. If you find a large amount of metal debris in the lube it tells you something bad is going on back there. Although rebuildable, it's not a home job...requires exact settings in order to operate properly. You can find good units far cheaper than even a gearset costs in any scrapyard. to match ratio, count the teeth on the ring gear and the pinion gear. the replacement MUST have the exact same number. Before swapping diffs, check all back there to make sure noise is not from somewhere else.

This cannot be done. That is the type security it comes with. Except you wanna remove it totally.

Cheers.

    • 1

Unlock all of the Jeepicon1.png Grand Cherokee's doors and open the driver's side door. Keeping the door open, lock it using the manual lock on the door itself.

    • 2

Put the manual key into the ignition and switch it to the "On" or "Run" position, whichever applicable, without starting the engine.

    • 3

Point the remote at the receiver (located by the little bulb on the caricon1.png ceiling) and hold down the "Lock" button for up to 5 seconds.

    • 4

When the driver's side door unlocks, you know the remote has been programmed correctly. If you are only programming one remote, jump to the next step. If not, manually re-lock the driver's side door and repeat steps 5 and 6 using each remote you would like to program and then continue.

    • 5

Turn the key to the "Off" position and turn the ignition on immediately. This must be done within 20 seconds of programming the last remote. You're finished!

Automatic door locks wont work on my 2004 jeep grand cherokee

There is a broken wire in the rubber casing between the door and the vehicle. Take the rubber casing off and you will more than likely find a broken wire or one about to break. Been there and done that.

I have had this problem once before. I solved it by resetting the "automatic locks" setting on the overhead console...first turned this off and then turned it back on a day later and the locks worked again fine.
