Apparently the 3.5 liter V6 had a lot of oiling problems, see link attached. Problems That Plague Chrysler 3 5L Engine Create Rebuild Opportunities
The slight knocking you hear may be a valve lifter that has gummed up. The head gasket problem may have allowed some coolant to get into the oil exacerbating gunk buildup. If it a deeper problem like rod bearings, you would have to decide if it is worth the trouble of fixing it or drive it until it drops.
4.6 engines cadillac water pump front of the engine behind a cover.if you see thermostat housing you will see water pump drive belt you need a water pump tool to remove water pump.you can buy the water pump socket removal tool at any auto parts stores.
sounds like the water pump bearing is worn out and has detroyed the water pump shaft seal.
coolant is leaking thru the seal area ,due to the bearing worn out --hence throwing the water pump pulley out of alignment.
The water pump pulley runs of the timing belt.---hence the knocking --either from the pulley or belt chaffing against the timing cover or even throwing the engine timing a few degrees off.
Need to replace water pump and timeing belt and anything else that may be damaged.
That's why, when ever you do a timing belt always do the water pump too.
How long did you keep driving the car after the belt broke? The engine is cooled by the water pump, the pump works only with the belt.If the cars engine was hot (normal at 212 degrees) and the belt broke that runs the water pump, and you kept driveing even a short distance you could have overheated the engine. If the knock is a deep solid sound the piston connecting rod bearings spun and the engine needs repaired or replaced. Its sad to say but an engine without a water pump is just like a person trying to live without a heart. If the heart stops the person stops.
I have a 1995 xj6....same problem. I replaced the belts, water pump, and the alternator. Still does it. As I play with the tension on the belt (belt that drives water pump, alternator) it goes away and comes back. If I remove the belt, the metal to metal screech stops. I then, with just the belt, turned the main pulley on the front of the engine, and there was the sound! The main pulley has 2 belts that run on it. Also, 2 pulley tracks. They SHOULD move simultaneously and be super meshed. But the rear one moves on its own under tension until it warms up and I guess, the bushing maybe expands. Now.....how do I fix it??????
its sound like our alternator belt broken that belt drive the water pump broken alternator belt charge light on belt dont turn water pump overheating dont drive with it check that out first thank you pierre
