Jack up vehicle; back off set nut that connects outer to inner tie rod; remove cotter pin and castle nut from outer ball socket of t/r end; take a 'pickle fork' and tap between joint and steering knuckle to separate; then unscrew the outer t/r from the inner t/r, "counting the number of turns until completely off. Run the new locking nut onto new tir rod end; turn t/r same number of turns, and lock set nut; runt the new post of t/r end back into steering knuckle, tap down with a hammer, and use new castle nut to tighten; insert new cotter pin and grease fitting; again tighted locking nut to inner t/r; grease new t/r end...good to go!

I keep having to replace tie rods on my 2003 olsmobile alero V-6 engine. I've done this 3 times and have been getting after market parts from AutoZone. Is this model known for continous breakdowns on...

They're not especially prone to failures. I'm suspecting worn struts or springs are excelerating wear in your tie rods if you're having to replace this often. Have a good front end shop look at it. Has car ever been in an accident involving front end?

YEP IF THEY NEED REPLACING BECAUSE THEY EFFECT STEERING AND TIRE WEAR.BEST TO GET A PRICE CHECK FIRST BECAUSE YOU LOOKING AT 1.0 LABOR TIME.PLUS FRONT END REALIGNMENT THIS HAS TO BE DONE WHEN REPLACING INNER OR OUTER TIE RODS AND PARTS.DONT LET THEM DO THE JOB UNTIL YOU GET A PRICE CHECK.IF DEALERSHIP DOING THE JOB I WOULD HAVE AT LEAST $700.00 IN POCKETS TO BE ON THE SAFE SIDE.

2000 LINCOLN LS - Outer tie rod removal assistance

Yes degreaser will not hurt it. The outer tie rod is retained only by one nut that connects it to the inner tie rod.Once you have this loosen just turn the outer tie rod to the left to remove it from the inner tie rod.

Outer tie rod passenger side replacement. I need directions for removal and instalation of the passenger side outer tie rod in a 99' olds alero.

Ok, well first thing you need to do is remove the wheel. Jack up the vehicle at a good jack point. Remove the wheel, then check for the location of the tie rod end. Most are to the left of the brake rotor. If this is the case, turn the steering wheel to the left, so the tie rod end is extended. Then, remove the cotter pin that slides through the little stud and nut. With that pin out, you can use a socket, most are either a 15 mm through 18 mm, to remove the nut. Don't remove it totally yet. Then, behind the outer tie rod end, there is another small nut that spins on the inner tie rod end, which the outer screws on to. You must loosen that nut first. The direction of the nut is clockwise to remove it. Once it is loose, you can remove the nut from the small stud. Then, you should see a striking point on the spindle, which is what the stud goes through. You will need a hammer, and strike it good to loosen the stud. Once the stud is loose, it should pop out, and then all you have to do is unscrew the outer tie rod end. Make sure to count the 360 degree spins, so your alignment isn't horribly out when you put the new one on. Now, to put the new one on, screw the new one on the exact amount of times that you counted coming off. Then, put the stud back into the hole in the spindle. Put the nut back on an tighten it. When it is tight, look at the nut and stud and make sure you have the hole in the stud unblocked by a part of the nut. If it is not blocked, put the cotter pin, should be a new one, into the hole and seperate the ends and wrap around the nut. This prevents the nut from backing itself out. Then go to the nut on the inner tie rod end and make sure it sits flush with the new outer tie rod end, then tighten. Then go ahead and straighten the steering wheel and put the wheel back on. ***Recommendation: get an alignment done after***

What causes a thumping noise when driving a 2000 Oldsmobile Alero and when turning the steering wheel?

It depends on where the sound is coming from, but the most likely suspect would be a worn tie-rod end. There is most likely excessive wear that is permitting movement of the tie-rod end and is thus causing the thumping sound when turning. That is when it would be most prevalent. Sorry for your trouble and I hope this helped. Best wishes.
