Check the belt on the PS-pump. Then on top of the steering sector box is a nut with a screw driver slot of a allen head slot. lossen the nut, & tighten the screw or allen slot by turning the slot counter clock wise, then tighten the nut back down. this should take the slack out of the steering wheel. Oh, check the fluid level in the PS-pump resivoir tank.

I have a 2007 Volvo s40 that makes a loud growling humming sound when driving just had new tires put on and it didn't change the noise.

You may have a faulty wheel bearing, if it's the front you may feel it in the steering wheel, turning side to side the noise may increase or decrease. If the noise is coming from the rear, you may feel it in your seat.

Whining noise is probably in one of the pulleys or belts. Probably the power steering. And the popping is probably CV axles.

Volvo xc90 2004 buzzing in steering wheel, clunck noise under car

that sounds like you are low on power steering fluid ... when the level gets low then the pump starts to ingest air and that produces a buzzing sound when you turn the wheel .....i would add or change the fluid and check for leaks and mechanical loosness in the under car linkages ...you can have that checked at your next oil change .

Volvo V70 very noisey when turning the steering wheel. No noise when driving straight

Check the power steering fluid level. If it is low, check for a leak.

Wheels will not turn when steering wheels are turned

Pretty doubtful it is your steering column. When all the junk around it is stripped away, it is a simple steel shaft that connects the steering wheel to the steering box.
You can do what no one online can do for you...Have someone turn the wheel and look at what is moving and what is not. Likely it's something major like the steering box or the chassis where the box is mounted that has failed. Whatever it turns out to be, it's likely to be obviously broken. (easier to find than a squeak or slight noise.
When you find it, ask if you need help with the repair procedure!!!
Good luck!!

I have a serious vibration through the steering wheel when engine is idling in drive. Also after driving for few a minutes steering becomes stiffer and there is a low humming noise, sounds like it's coming...

A car's steering wheel will vibrate when driving if the car's alignment needs to be adjusted. also possible bad engine or trans mount
have them inspected .

This will help. Thanks please keep updated.please do rate the solution positively .thank you for using fixya

Is there a way that I can "tighten" up the steering wheel play?

Parts do wear out. Try this: Have a friend help you and have the vehicle on a solid surface (garage floor or better yet ramps) have your friend move the steering wheel back and forth just enough to take up the play (clunk to clunk) then go around to the moving parts and you can feel where the play is. Don't overlook the coupler at the base of the steering column. You don't necessarly need the engine running (Less blood that way) This usually works very good finding where the play is. You may even be able to follow the clunk noise. Let me know how this works for you?
