Question about 1985 Ford Ranger
My ford ranger sputters and backfires, was told had timing problem
More than likely it is a timing problem,or the valves are not seating right, diesel in petrol ??air leak on inlet manifold without having the motor in front of me its difficult to diagnose. This is an older vehicle of potential classic possibilities. Therefore because its so valuable i would suggest you call a local mobile mechanic. One with a few years under his belt who has worked on these vehicles when they were new,and if he doesnt do it right kick his zimmer frame away

Look if belt is good, take the spark plug of cylinder 1, look at front bottom (Crank) pulley, and make the main mark on pulley line up with "O" Top Dead Center, take distributor cap off and the rotor will indicate the cylinder number one, the pisto has to be all the way up, introduce wire on spark plug treated hole and make sure the piston is all the way up, remove timing cover and look at cam pulleys marks or mark has to be exact, and the two valves of cylinder Number one have to be closed all the way on compression. if every mark lines up your car is on timing if not, start engine loose distributor bottom nut and turn it slow anticlock, but very little and if You notice that engine accelerates a little, just a little, if you start motor and car pins a little, turn it like clock , a hair
