When shifting you can hear and feel the transmission actually shifting into other positions, but the gages aren't changing. I tried disconnection the battery to reset the computer, but that did not work.

Is the rod still connected and actually changing the gear selector on the Trans? It will not start due to the N safety switch. You need to establish if trans is actually changing gears.

Could be the park neutral switch. It senses that foot is on the brake pedal so shifter can be moved.

2oo3 mercury moutaineer wont turn over from ignition but from silenoid it will. any ideas

Sounds like your Interlock switch on the Brake pedal switch or the linkage in the shift cable is out of time. Check brakelights.

There was a problem in vehicle lurching when started. There were 2 different ideas to solve this. One system would allow the starter to work and the engine to run, but made shifting out of Park impossible without a foot on the brake. The other system required the foot on the brake and this signal would allow the starter solenoid to get a pulse from the Ignition switch. Some required the Gearshift to be in Park or Neutral before the brake signal could clear the Ignition and provide a pulse.

So your brake pedal switch probably is out of position or broken. If it is good, then the Gearshift position must be slightly off.

Also check the small wires on the solenoid to see if Voltage is present whenkey is turned to start and foot on brake.

98 Suburban 5.7L, automatic trans is stuck in park - no previous shifting problems, I know that the brake switch also operates the brake/transmission solenoid (BTS). Stepping on the brake pedal prior to starting the vehicle allows shifting from park to another gear. When I switch the key to the "on" position, I don't hear the BTS click. I can start the vehicle and the brake lights work fine. I just can't shift out of Park. I am unemployed and I am trying to troubleshoot this problem and fix it myself. Please help!

The sensor on the brake pedal is not working. The brake pedal must be pushed before the shift level will release and allow shifting. If you are holding in the brake but it is not letting you shift, the brake activation switch is not working properly and, therefore, not allowing you to shift out of park.

It is also possible that the fuse for the brake lights is out and not activating the switch but this is less likely.

Good luck,

Unable to turn key to position II in order to start engine on a 2003 volvo s60

Try shifting the car from park to D and then back again while holding your foot on the brake. Assuming that the steering wheel turns freely, the car has a lockout switch tied to the shifter in the console that will keep it from starting if the car is not firmly in park.

I had the same thing happen to my 2003 saburban, it turned out to be a 20 amp fuse for the PMC located in the fuse panel under the hood.

Gear shift won't move out of park

safety switch on brake pedal. common cause is a wire breaking off. there are 1 to 2 wires going to this switch. It is located on the brake pedal bracket above the foot pad.
