Question about 2002 Volkswagen Passat
The bottom bolt of the alternator won't come out. It doesn't have enough room because of the fan.
My neighbor came by with his 2002 Passat and needed the alternator replaced. Although this is the first time I've worked on one I was able to quickly figure out how to get the bottom bolt out . First remove the throttle body and using a special tool ( I used a phillips head screwdriver) lock the cooling fan pulley in place so that it does not turn while loosening the bolt .There will be two slots on the pulley housing and small holes in the pulley for the tool ( phillips screwdriver) to rest in locking the pulley in place. . Slightly tap the pulley forward after the bolt is removed and lower it enough to get to the bottom bolt of the alternator. If he had the new alternator ( had to special order) it would have taken me all of 45 mins to replace. Good luck.
