Can't remove bottom bolt on alternator on a 2002 vw passat

The bottom bolt of the alternator won't come out. It doesn't have enough room because of the fan.

I have plenty of room to get my fingers on it from the top. The bolt just seems too long and won't clear the hole for the alternator to come off. The bolt will come out about an inch and a half and then hits the fan. I tried moving the fan around to see if there was some sort of opening but was not able to find one.

My neighbor came by with his 2002 Passat and needed the alternator replaced. Although this is the first time I've worked on one I was able to quickly figure out how to get the bottom bolt out . First remove the throttle body and using a special tool ( I used a phillips head screwdriver) lock the cooling fan pulley in place so that it does not turn while loosening the bolt .There will be two slots on the pulley housing and small holes in the pulley for the tool ( phillips screwdriver) to rest in locking the pulley in place. . Slightly tap the pulley forward after the bolt is removed and lower it enough to get to the bottom bolt of the alternator. If he had the new alternator ( had to special order) it would have taken me all of 45 mins to replace. Good luck.

You'll probably have to get to it from under the car or through the wheelwell.

Did you try to remove the bracket the bolt goes into? I had a car a few rears back where I had to remove the bracket from the engine. It had 2 small bolts, about 1 inch long. The real long bolt was just used as a pivot. It wouldn't come out while the bracket was still bolted to the engine. They build these things to keep the average guy from getting into them.

Remove Fan pulley assy by unbolting the pulley from under the altenator . If you remove the throttle body it's easy to get to . You will need a phillips head to lock the pulley in place so that it will not turn while removing the bolt. Unscrew this bolt and tap the pulley softly to get it off . Once it is out of the way the bottom bolt can be removed with ease. Note: the fan will not come out it will just be out of the way. Good luck.

How do I remove a rear child window stop on a 2013 VW Passat?

Well, it is not just a child safety feature, if you notice your rear doors are designed to follow the curve of the rear wheel at the bottom. There is physically not enough room for the window to fit in the bottom of the door.

I have 97 mitsibishi 3000GT alternator not workin got all the bolts off but how does it come out top or bottom?

the only way to really remove it is to take it out from the bottom, but get ready for a project. The only way to take it out of the bottom is to take the drive axle out, luckily you do not have to take it out of the transmission though. Good luck

Vw passat 1.8t battery problem?

Hi

Either your battery has just given up the ghost,........ Is it the original, and now 10 yrs old ?
Or your Alternator is not charging enough, to replenish what is used.

Have battery tested first, if OK, then the alternator belt tension, and alternator for correct output charging rate.

If all these shows no faults, your starter is then suspect.

Good Luck !

A FixYa would be nice thanks !....John.
