can you hear this noise when the car is idleing in your driveway with the hood up?

do you feel it in the steering wheel or in the seat when it makes the clunk?

are you in 4WD when it makes the noise? if not, does it not make the noise when 4WD is engaged?

It sounds like the Auto lock mechanism is failing. Ford has a real bad problem with these. anyway, If you don't use the 4 wheel drive atleast 1 every other month the grease gets gummy. then the mech will start grabbing and thats the sound you hear. replace the mec and don't forget to cycle to maintain the mechanism. or just get manual lock out hubs.. You may be able to get away with just cleaning and repacking them.

Not a mech, just done my own work for a long time.

In 2 wheel drive there is a whirring sound from the front end followed by a loud clunk where it feels as though you have run over a large rock or chunk of ice. Does not seem to occur in 4wd

if the whirring you describe sounds like an airplane and increases with speed that would be a wheelbearing and it may be loose to cause the clunk noise. when it is put in 4 wheel drive that can load the bearing up and noise goes away.

I have a loud clunking noise that happens when I turn the steering wheel left and right. And I have a clunk when you put in to drive, but when car is warmed up it doesn't seem to be as bad. Can anyone...

The clunk you are hearing when the car is placed into drive is the "slack" in the drive train being taken out. It should pose no problem and without knowing the type of car you are driving is difficult to judge if it may be something more serious. If anything it could be the universal or CV (constant Velocity) joints making the sound from excess wear. The clanking when the wheel is turned could be CV joints getting old and needing replaced (Front wheel drive and 4WD only. Rear Wheel drive Universal Joint) or it could be excessively worn parts in the steering system. Definitely have this looked at.
