Question about 1997 Subaru Outback

Oil leaking from front of motor.

Oil is leaking from somewhere behind timing belt cover and on to manifold when motor is running of 1997 Subaru Outback. Have taken covers off but still can't seem to locate from where.Could it be from the sump gasket being faulty? Although the timing belt is still in place and I have'nt touched the tension I did place socket on left hand top pully bolt to loosen off and it made a clicking sound (sort of like the wheel of fortune when spun) when I applied pressure. Could I have upset the timing or are all pullys fitted with locking keys. Hope you can help in pin pointing where the oil could come from other than that the motor runs really well. could you please also suggest what gaskets I would require. Thank you. Regards Gerry

Being it is a 97 outbac, I believe you have the EJ25 Duel over head cam Boxer motor, Very good motor. If i am correct you have 5 places that most likely could be the leak. THe crank pulley, in center, Or either of the 4 cam shafts. You will have to look for more signs of the leak. If leaking from the cams you will usualy see the oil on the iside of the pulleys them selves. The crank seal on the other hand generally runs down the center of the block.Please be very careful to check your timing marks on your pulleys before you start it, due to the belt posibly slipping from what you had said. The crank has a small hash line that points up to a mark in the block The top pulleys on both sides have a sigle line that points to a notch straight up on the cover and double lines that point straght down at double lines on the lower pulleys. And the lower pulleys also have a single line that point to a notch outward that is on the cover. Hope this helps and have a good day.

what engine.? lots of engines, used. and 21 models of civic, USA.
its usually.
1: valve cover, (yes, most can leak from top down behind the belt.
2: cam seals
3: crank end seal
4: oil pump seals.
6: oil pan ( last choice)

finding oil leaks takes hard work , clean, it find it .
or use the dye kits.

gravity and wind, allows it to go where ever IT wants.
so it must be clean first to find it.. see?

question, at the 60k mile service points. you check lash, settings.
with a new timing belt. and at such point, a new valve cover gasket gets fitted, did you? if yes, its not leaking if not>????
the front edge of the VC gasket, leaks down behind what i call
the VC leak hidder, tin pan. plate. behind the cam cog
is a plate, and the VC leaks down from there to the cam seal
then down front of engine, then past crank seal the, to cover.
seen this on all most all OHC engines...
cause, nobody does the 60k or does it and uses the old gaskets.
id look there first. but id dont have service history.
start high work down due to gravity.....

Oil leak


There is a timing cover gasket behind the water pump.
You may have to clean off the block to find the leak. Mechanics can use dye in the oil and a black light.

Oil leak front engine timing chan


1995 Tracker would have a timing BELT. Normal oil leak points (in order) on a Suzuki G16 engine are the distributor base (rear of motor), valve cover (top of motor), front main seal (behind lower timing belt cog) cam seal (behind the upper timing belt cog) and rear main seal. (behind the flywheel). I'd suspect the front main seal or cam seal. I use foot power to help find oil leaks.

Antifreeze leaked out from somewhere in the back of motor .the two front holes are not leaking no check engine.temp gauge rises to the top cant see the leak i just here pressure being released and some...


if it is coming from behind the r front tire and is a 4cyl the water pump has an o-ring that fits between pump and block and is behind timing cover where you can not see it. usually if it is leaking you can look under car at the engine on r-side at p/s pump area and can see where coolant has run down oil pump to oil pan from behind t-cover. hope this helped give me more info if not and good luck................

Oil leak from rocca cover or cam seal


I don't understand what a rocca cover is, but your two most common oil leak locations are the front cam seal behind the timing belt pulley and the rear cam journal plug in the valve cover.
For a leak at the front, next time you replace your timing belt, unbolt the pulley, extract the old seal with a sharp hook, and press in a new seal. Be sure that the new seal is pressed in straight, and grease the lips before you press it in. Often, the front crankshaft seal fails about the same time, so replace that one as well while you have the timing belt off.
For a leak at the rear, reach back there behind the valve cover with solvent on a rag and clean it up nice and dry, then coat the edges of the rubber plug liberally with silicone seal. Allow to dry. Replace the rubber plug next time you have the valve cover off, but use some silicone seal to secure the new one so it stays in place and won't start leaking.
These cars are prone to valve cover gasket leaks, so expect to replace the valve cover gasket every few years. This is a particular problem if you use synthetic oil.
Any time you have problems with oil leaks, suspect that the crankcase is pressurizing due to a plugged ventilation system. Check the flame arrestor to make sure it is clean and clear. The flame arrestor is between the legs of the intake manifold, generally in a hard-to-get-at location. Also, blow down the hose below the flame arrestor to make sure that the oil mist separator box on the side of the engine block has not plugged up with sludge.

2002 outback 2.5 liter eng. leaks oil behind the plastic cover plate in front of engine benind pulley. would this be a major seal?


It's the front crank seal. You have to take the timing belt out to replace the seal. The seal is mounted in the oil pump, which is bolted to the front of the engine block. Please let me know if you have questions.

Where is the oil filter located in a 2009 Subaru WRX?


You need to remove the splash cover directly under the engine to expose the oil filter. It is located at the front to the motor below the timing cover.
The oil capacity with a filter change is 4.2 quarts.
Subaru recommends a SAE 5W-30 oil
You can run a good quality Castrol GTX
Or a synthetic (Mobil 1) is as good as any.
NOTE: Don't skimp on the filter. Buy a quality 1.
Although I am a true believer in Amsoil which is what I use in my Nissan 300Z road race cars.

I noticed my subaru leeking oil, i checked the oil level and was fine and eveytime i drive fast there is a small bit of smoke and burning smell from the engine can anybody help???


Hi, you may have a valve cover gasket leak that is dripping on the exhaust manifold. I would inspect the valve cover area for oil spots and rim leaks. The smoke is coming from the dripping of the oil on the manifold or, lower exhaust pipe.

1987 Subaru GL Oil Pump location


Assuming the car has the 1.8 engine, the oil pump is on the front of the motor, behind the timing belt covers. The belts have to come off to change the oil pump. If you are a novice, this is a difficult task. If you usually fix your own stuff, then it is not so bad. Just be sure to replace both belts while you are at it, and be sure to get them set right. If it is the 1.8, one belt drives one cam, and the other drives the other cam, the oil pump, the distributor, and maybe also the water pump....It's been 10 years since I had mine. Good luck
