The Key won't turn in the ignition

I have a 1995 Saab 900S and the key will not turn in the ignition. The car is in reverse and the key is on the lock position and no matter what we do it will not budge. I've had this happen before and I have unhooked the battery for a minute to reset the computer and it comes out of it but it won't do it this time.. Please Help me!!!

Thank you,

Kim

Ignition switch and new key may be the only solution to your problem.
I say this only because one other time in my life I had a simular problem and that is what fixed it.
Although I do have an alternative suggestion that could result in a simular problem but it only will purtains to automatic shifting SAABS. could purtain to standard shifts but I'm not sure.
And that is a cable that detects when your vehicle is in park.
If this cable gets out of ajustment your ignition switch will think the car is not in park thus not moving a lever that is located in the ignition switch allowing it to move to and out of the locked position eficiently.
This could also purtain to standard shifts but because of lack of knowledge on that specific vehicle I"M NOT SURE.
I hope this helps you.
GOOD LUCK!

The more you use your key, the more the key will wear down overtime. Eventually (especially with car keys) the key will not match up to your tumblers in the lock, and will intermittently not work, and eventually not turn at all. Do you have a spare? if so use it see if it works, then have a copy made. If you don't, call the dealership, have them make you another key, or call a locksmith.

Now if the key won't come out of the ignition, that's a whole other issue, but it doesn't sound like this is the case. Hope this helps you out, good luck!

I have an automatic saab 900s. when starting once you have turned the key and it starts and go to release it it turns off. i have to hold it in the on postion. is this a problem with the ignition switch

There is a lock in the ignition lock cylinder that holds the key in the run position after going to START. The locking mechanism is made of lead which will wear after while creating these problems because of the softness of the metal, but a replacement should last you as long as the original.

My key is stuck in the ignition on my 97 Saab 900. It starts ok just when I turn it to the lock position the key wont come out. Any Ideas.

Some Saabs lock the gearlever in reverse as a security measure, and won't let you take the key out until reverse is selected.

How do you remove an Ignition Lock Cylinder from a 91 saab 900s

Option A
  1. remove driver side seat
  2. insert the key and turn to midway between "lock" and "accessories" position,
  3. push stiff wire tool such as metal coat hanger, into the hole in the side of the gear housing at the ignition lock, to push in the spring loaded pin in the housing
  4. while pushing on the pin, pull out on the key to remove the cylinder
  5. to re-assemble, reverse the procedure; check that the tooth segment driver pins in the gear lever housing are in the correct position to receive the new cylinder
  6. push in the spring again, and insert the cylinder until it clicks

Option B
  1. Cut down a spare key so that it's about 1.5 inch long measured from the tip, and has no lobes.
  2. unscrew the console: two screws under the shifter boot, two screws in the rear base visible after removing the ashtray.
  3. insert the key in the ignition, turn to "run", put shifter in neutral.
  4. lift console up on shifter lever, if necessary you can undo the three Torx T25 bolts holding shifter into base and lift it out, to completely remove the console.
  5. undo the gear lever housing nuts, needs a special Saab tool but you can make one yourself, it just has three tabs equidistantly spaced - here's a pic, 13c7448.jpegfrom saabcentral forums
  6. remove the lever housing, place in a vice, and follow Option A above.

Look at the teeth on the key and you should be able to see where it is hitting. Take the key to a locksmith and he can either correct it or advise you.

Your ignition lock probably has sticky pin inside of tumbler.
Try spraying some WD40 or PB Blast into the key cylinder.
