For a tank to burst so violently there has to be a massive build up of pressure in the cooling system. With the ambient temp so low I would say that the coolant has frozen and cracked the head or block and when you started up the combustion gases escaped directly into the water jacket and over pressurized the radiator. ith the hose swelling up It is a safe bet. The antifreeze has to be top notch to prevent freezing
SOURCE: thermostat
The thermostat is on the housing connected to the bottom hose. There is no gasket. You put a bead of water pump rv silicon on the housing and bolt it together. Make sure to put the jiggle/bleeder valve at the top when replacing the thermostat. You have to unbolt the power steering pump bracket and fold back the power steeing pump to get to the lower hose and housing.

the water pump and thermostat should have solved it. an air pocket can cause that but usually not to that degree.
don't get one of those cheap *** plastic impeller water pump for sissies. Get the metal impeller one. get a cool running thermostat and drill two 3/16" holes in it 180 degreess from each other. you may have installed the t-stat backwards.
