1999 Toyota Solara Starter or Ignition Switch problem?

This morning, after sitting in the cold garage for 4 or 5 days, I started the car, a 4cyl Solara, and it started but the starter would not disengage, and made a terrible noise, like the engine was eating the starter alive. I turned the engine off, the engine turned off but the starter kept turning the engine over and the starter would not turn off, even with the key out of the ignition. My guess is a bad ignition switch...any agreements or disagreements?

Your problem is a faulty starter solenoid relay.
It is staying in the POWER ON position.
The relay is located under the hood near the power distribution panel (fusebox) i believe.
Consult your owners manual or Repair manual for exact location.

1. You may have already done this, but call your dealer or get on-line and find out if there has been a recall on this particular item.
2. Has the starter or solinoid been replaced or worked on in the past?
3. Has any other procedure related to your starting system been performed?
4. As you have surmised, the ignition switch could have shorted, effectively "welding itself" to the positive terminal of the switch; or, similarly, the solenoid either mechancally or electrically, is hanging up and creating the same scenario.

This is potentially a dangerous situation, as it can cause an automobile to catch fire and burn itself to the ground.

Do not trust this situation If it has apparently corrected itself. A automobiles' starting system is a high voltage/amperage circuit. So much so,You can weld with it.

Do not trust this situation unless you are certain you have found the problem.

1999 Toyota solara is making making a clicking sound before I start in the morning, after 3 clicks it starts, I already know the fuel/air sensor needs to be replaced but would this cause the car not to...

It could be the starter solenoid clicking if the noise comes while holding the key in the Start position. It can also be the starter relay. Here's a thread on a similar problem:

When I turn the ignition key my camry solara 1999 erratically does not start. I have to start again and again until the starter motor get engaged. I had the started changed and the problem is not fixed...

Your starter has a relay that you may want to check. However, I think the problem is actually in your ignition switch itself. The ignition switch supplies the power to your starter and if that switch is going bad it will not send power to your starter. I hope this solves your problem or at least gives you a place to start looking. Best wishes.

I have a 2001 IS 300 with 160,000 mi. I was having trouble starting the car in the morning where it would take 2 or 3 tries to get it to turn over. It is in a garage in California, so not in extreme cold....

try if this works\improves your situation;

turn the key to ON but don't crank, let it sit for 2 seconds. Do this 2-3 times, then put it in the ON position, wait 2 seconds then crank. As for what it is, could be spark plugs, fuel pump\line issue, etc..

When I turn the key to start the car it "clicks" . I have to turn it off and on four or five times before it starts. I just had a new battery installed. Do I need a new starter motor?

this sounds like a bad starter. it probably has a short. you should take it over to Autozone or Kragen type parts store they can check your starting system for free.other wise it is the ignition switch

1999 Toyota 4-Runner sometimes won't start

Sounds like the starter is getting ready to go out. I'd look at being ready to replace it soon. If it is a stick shift transmission car, you can PUSH start the car, but you probably want to get it done before this happens. This is what mine did, click, click, start, over a period of about 2 weeks before it finally went out. Replaced it, starts first time every time now.

Hope this helps.

Consider trying with another battery. Possibly the battery is dying bcos the alternator is not charging up to rating.
