So far i took apart the column mind you i had take half the dash apart to but none the less the tricky part was getting the key lock cylinder off once i did that i exposed the column an there was the problem there is a little wire that is supposed to be connected to the shifter and it had slipped off now the only thing is i have to try and put that back on its kinda tricky to because the wire is really small and its in a small work space if i get it i will follw up thanks anyways

You will need to have it up on a lift to inspect the under carriage where it hooks up to the transmission. Sounds like you lost something.

The key is in the ignition and turned to the accessory poistion. The key will turn to run and the start position but the car will not start. The key will not return to the off postion and cannot be removed...

The shifter linkage being loose could cause this problem. Try to shift the car into neutral with the key turned to on, and then try to to start it. The car may start in N, if this is the case the adjustment is on the side of the transmission.

Check the linkage on your steering column, first. You can disconnect it from the transmission, then see if it moves freely.

Check to see that nothing has worked loose or worn in the gear linkage system and subsequently gone out of alignment. This would account for the indicator being incorrect and the difficulty in getting into a starting mode

My Ford Taurus 1998 will not shift in to drive the shifter just moves back and fourth

The linkage from the shifter to the transmission has become disconnected. Like all newer cars there is a wide usage of plastic. If the shifter is on the steering column check it inside the engine compartment and look for the linkage where the column enters thru the firewall there, If its a floor shifter you'll have to get under the car to inspect it. Like always heat, age, dirt, and rust take over.

Shift lever on column came loose inside column.

no, u shouldn't have to pull the steering wheel. pull the cover off the column, there are 2 or 4 nuts that hold the column up to the dash, remove them and let the column lay on the seat- u should disconnect your battery before doing so. you can get to the shift tube from there- most likely u'll find that the bushings have gone bad and need replacement.

Van won't lock into reverse or park all the time.

it is either the shifter or the cable, I would go with a broken part in the shifter linkage. Detrim the steering column and see what shows up, very easy just 4 screw I think.
