When running, why does the engine "hunt" and doesn't run stead(ily)?

Your mean it surges ! The idle goes up an down , not running at a Constant or steady speed . Well , a vacuum leak could cause that . Could have a IAC - idle air control problem , mass air flow sensor , TPS - throttle position sensor , map sensor , fuel injector problems . The first place to look would be having a scan tool hooked up . A professional type ! One that can view engine sensor data . Also check the battery an the charging system .

Volvo v40 1998 model

Could have many causes, but a good start could be to have the
oxygen sensor voltage output checked.(In exhaust system)
This would explain why mixture/ variable idle speed occurs.

1993 geo tracker idle up and down

HOT ENGINE? (ill guess hot)
idle surges.(hunts) (very simple reasons or very hard to find.
the car has 2 engines. G16A and G16B
they work totally opposite, (8valve and 16v)
the vin number tells you the engine type ,digit 8 is engine code
6= G16B 16v
U= G16A 8v
i have factory book. its in chapter 0 these facts.
the cause of idle surge and hunt are:
1: ISC failures. the ISC can stick partially open and then hunts.
clean it and test it . see videos of how.
2: engine running so bad the ISC can nOT regulate idle speeds.

#2 is caused by up to 50 reasons.
8v , air leaks, cause racing idle and iSC goes nuts.
16v , all air leaks cause lean and if too lean the ISC goes nuts.

by nuts , i mean it hunts or gives up.

the list is endless, but the tests are basic,
i cant help you because no engine stated.

1998 suzuki swift idle problems 4 speed 1300cc

no engine type stated, there are 6 engines used.
but bad idle is caused by 2 things.
  • misfire.
  • or lean AFR, lean fuel mix.. causes HUNTING
the ECU can also cause the hunt if it can not hold hot idle to spec.
most cars is 800rpm.

Idle up down

hunting or surging ilde. name the 2 RPMS, low and high , is it hot or cold engine this issue.? 400rpm or 1000 or 2000 all are diff.causes.
no year, stated. so cant help.
but ill answer in the generic,
1: the ECU (got a carb,? )
the ecu controls idle speed at all times.
if not , there is a problem (you)
A: air leaks in the induction will make motor race at some point the ECU/ISC loses control. and hunts. trying hard to correct it.
b: egr stuck open idle too low, iSC cant correct it,, bad EGR.
c: engine EFI running way too leak starving for fuel so it hunts for 2 reasons < ISC hunting, and lean does that.
lean is gross power loss and opening throttle bogs the engine.
so is double bad. ISC makes it worse,

all this breaks down to 2 reasons.
1: ISC bad. in some way (gummed up. or restricted inside)
2: bad fueling or air leaks. vacuum leaks.

try answers , the hot cold question and the 2 speeds, of the hunt.
lowest rpm and highest of the hunted range of RPM.

When I stop or sit in neutral my 2000 Volvo S80 idle goes up and down, how can I fix this?

symtom of faulty I A C motor (idle air control motor) this regulates the idle air to fuel ratio when at idle, when faulty dumps more fuel ,then the o2 sensors tell computor to much fuel for throttle position/ speed so computor backs off fuel almost stalls dumps fuel again and repeats. we call this hunting. because air/ fuel mixture changes idle goes up n down.
im sure the dealer will gladly relieve you of lots of money.....try aftermarket or an auto wrecker may have one . careful i've seen some volvo engine parts need programing after instalation (dealer only)!!!

The fuel pump was changed, now it idles high.

The idle speed is controlled by an Engine Control Module (ECM).
It needs to be put on a computor to be checked.
The idle air valve provides the control for constant idle speed. In order to set the correct air valve opening to achieve constant idle speed, the fuel injection control unit uses information from the air mass meter, A/C switch, throttle valve switch and the ignition control unit (RPM signal) to regulate the output current to idle air valve. This means, there is alot of things that can make the idle speed go up or down...Hope this was some help to you??

Constant misfire,(hunting) have changed,plugs,leads distributer,injectors,timing checked,no air leaks,no codes showing.CO% 8.5

Hello! I suspect that the vehicle has a defective Throttle Position Sensor (TPS)...It is mounted on the throttle body...You can locate it by its wire colors...Black, White, and Pink/Black...If you have knowledge of a voltmeter, you can test it...Locate the sensor...push the end of a paper clip into the rear of the connector on the Black wire and another into the White wire...
With the car at idle put the negative meter probe on the Black and the positive on the White...Set the scale on the meter to read 1-5 volts...At idle you should read less than 1 volt...Have someone slowly increase engine speed...The voltage should rise to 4 volts without jumping, or erratic needle movement...If the voltage skips, jumps, or acts erratic the TPS is defective...

At idle the engine revs up and down

engine lite on? would ck to make sure there is plenty of coolant in system. low coolant may cause idle hunting. also could have a vacuum leak or air intake restriction. ck air filter

Runs erratically

The idle air valve (located below the throttle body) provides the control for constant idle speed. In order to set the correct air valve opening to achieve constant idle speed, the fuel injection control unit uses information from the air mass meter, throttle valve switch and the ignition control unit (RPM signal) to regulate the output current to the idle air valve. This means that the idle valve is not affected by air leaks or a jammed throttle valve.
