Question about 2006 Subaru B9 Tribeca

1 Answer

Oil consumption My 2006 Tribeca had to have a new engine put in it June 2008. The signals were billowy white smoke and oil consumption. The car was returned to me in July 08 with the new engine. In Oct 08, we had to put 1 1/4 quarts of oil in it. (there was no leak or smoke noted). Had oil change and informed the dealer. Now in Jan 09, noticed the smoking again with the same odor as previous. I checked the oil and level was at "L". It was due for an oil change and is now at the dealer. The dealer just informed me of a recall regarding the gasket. I now have to reschedule when it comes in. I have to relate that i am very nervous about this "engine". The dealer told me that it is not unusual for a car to need a quart of oil with each 3-4000 miles?? what do you think?

    Massive white smoke comes out of the exhaust at startup. the car has 21K miles on it!. Loses 2Quarts+ per 1000 miles. Subaru is now "checking" so see whether there is oil consumption. They top off the oil and I have to come back after 1000 miles. Have done it 3 times so far! I've been very polite and they keep saying "when we ascertain that there is oil consuption, we will call the subaru rep !!!???!!!

    I dont;

2006 Focus Diesel blowing lots of white smoke out exhaust, mostly at low speeds. What can the probelm be?

If you experience the higher USEAGE of OIL on the engine then it is possible that the oil rings are weak on the engine. So please make sure that this consumption of oil is seen , if so the oil also can blacken faster and cause more damage to the engine. You will need to overhaul the engine is this problem is seen.

I havea daewoo nubira and we replaced the valve cover gasket yesterday , did an oik change and now the engine is smoking white smoke. Try to check to hoses, could not see a leak. Where is the cylinder...

Hello and welcome to FixYa!

The cylinder head is located on the center of the engine. Yes it can be a worn out head gasket or piston rings. If the piston rings are worn out the oil is burnt that's why it emits white smoke. You will need to replace the head gasket and piston rings.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

Smokes when you start up and then stops

didn t say what color smoke --if you start up on cold or damp days and get a small white or steam looking discharge from tail pipe than your burning out/off the moisture that has accumulated in the exhaust system when all moisture gone smoke gone ---white alot- billowy-and doesnt stop burning coolant -water/anti-freeze-leak in coolant or the famous blown head gasket ----black smoke and not a diesel carbon build up and or need tuneup---blue smoke burning oil something in engine is damaged and allowing oil into cylinder and is being burnt

Car is smoking on start up, a lot of white smoke

If the engine is using oil then first remove the dipstick and run the engine, check to see if heavy smoke is coming out of the tube, this would indicate worn piston rings,if it is not so dense, yet you are using oil and it smokes bad from the exhaust, then its likely the valve seals are worn. either way, unless you have mechanical knowledge, tools etc , you need to take it to a mechanic for the engine repairs or live with the oil consumption. There are no quick fixes for engine wear.

My 2008 Tribeca also uses excessive oil

That is surprising and I'm sorry to read of your troubles. We have an 05 Legacy 2.5i with 68k+ miles and plugging along good so far......

I don't know what state you're in but there should be a lemon law applicable to the problem you're having. You're obviously under 3yr/36k manufacturer warranty. If I were you I'd formally request repair of the problem and not accept test/diagnosis without action. Sounds like you're getting a run around......

Their diagnostic equipment shows no fault codes but further testing has shown that one bank is having to work harder than the other side. Their prognosis is a new engine.
