Check engine light on, car shakes while in reverse, stalls ...

Hi, have an 01 jetta turbo. Recently, the check engine light came on and the car started running terribly. It revs on its own, when you put it in reverse, it shakes, and when you start the car, it shakes and will stall. Help!

My car shakes when I start it, and then stalls.. it shakes in reverse really bad! Also, it shakes at red lights. Did you find out what the problem is????

  • jengesh May 22, 2009

i think i have the same problem. Mine is too a 2001 Jetta Wolfsburg.

The car started shaking badly when i started in the morning until it warmed up. Then it kinda returned to normal (but not the usual normal). Then when i started driving in gear 1 and then 2 over 25 kms/hr, the engine started shaking again badly and the check engine light came on blinking badly. then when i slowed down, it disappeared. I could notice some gasoline dripping out of the exhaust pipe....

i have the same problem while engaging the reverse gear as well....

Any help would be appreciated as i am not able to take the car to a mechanic too!!!!!!!!!!!

I was having this same problem. I have a 2000 Honda Accord. The engine light was also on. When I put it on the OBD II test it came back as my O2 sensors. I replace my O2 sensors and the same thing occurred. All together I have replace the spark plugs, spark plugs wire, 2 O2 sensors, throttle sensor, new distributor cap. I had the same problem until I replaced the catalytic converter and the fuel pump. My problem went away along with the check engine light. I went to a dealer and go the car checked completely and he says if it still wasn't the problem change the fuel injector put I didn't have to go through that.

You need a code scanner hooked up to find out what is causing the light ot come on. Some auto part stores can do that. Once the code is retrieved, they can tell you what sensor is causing it.

Well, you didn't mention that when you posted it.Somebody else will tell you thr same thing.

yes i agree i had that problem and took it to advance auto . the scanner said it was the air flow sensor . my husband had it checked and it was fine . so again i had it checked and the same thing. i insisted he check it for the 3rd time he didn't want to but did to shut me up he did, and wala it was not the sensor but the electric plug going to it was loose and cracked. fixed the plug and it worked fine after that.

You need to go to a shop with a code reader. The check engine light was telling you something and you need a code reader. Depending on which country you are in, if in the states autozone may have it for free.

Whatever initiated the light is now messing up the other parts of the car.

Hope that helps.

Have someone diagnose the transmission. Sounds like the torque converter locking up when it shouldn't and not when it should. It can, of course, be from other problems, like low/contaminated fluid. The battery light coming on when it stalls is normal(as well as the oil warning light).

Check for vacumn leaks. Replace coil. Check plug boots for oil or water on them. PCV hose from intake manifold will get soft and collapse. Replace motor mounts. The passanger side mount is a fluid filled mount.
