There could be 3 things wrong that you should check.
You already checked the bulbs and they were good, so there could be a short or broken wire leading to the light sockets and you will have to trace the wiring, or the reverse/neutral light switch that is connected to your shifter that tells the lights that the vehicle is in reverse may need to be replaced.

CAN YOU START THE VEHICLE WHILE IN THE NEUTRAL? IF NOT, THEN SURELY THE REVERSE./NEUTRAL SWITCH NEEDS TO BE REPLACED

    the switch is on the shift linkage or transmission near linkage, it
    most likely just needs ajustment to made contact when in reserve,
    however in might be bad

It's probably the back up light switch. I'll need to know what engine and transmission you have to determine it's location.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

There is a reverse light switch right at the transmission. This would hold true for both automatic and conventional. Your described problem indicates possibly a fault one. While checking/replacing, it may be to your advantage to check likewise the connector/terminals and ensure that they are free of corrosion, dirt/grime, dried oil/dust.

Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

Hello;
Check the back up light switch. These go out often and since the bulbs are good, I would look at the switch. Hope this helps.
Thanks;

Welcome to Fixya! Look under the Hood in the Fuse Relay Box. Check all the Fuses and See if there is a Relay for these in there also. And check the Fuse Panel inside the Car also With a Flashlight to see exactly what is good and Blown. Let me know what you find. Please Rate My Response! Thanks!

98 jeep cherokee sport reverse lights have no power

lamps good,
fuses good. in fuse boxes.
so the reverse switch is bad.?
on the A/t car this switch is called the PRNDL switch prindle.
if the R contact goes bad (as the all do) the lamps go dead.

Headlights not working

check drl unit if not found integrated in fusebox check connections at battery and all fuses if ok if no test light is available take each fuse out 1 at a time and check if not burnt then you have relays for headlights and parking try the 4 way hazards to see if the parking lights function then if all is good play with the multifunction switch to see if not burnt

Instrument cluster lights don't work. Fuses and bulbs are good.

feed wire for the lights may have failed or the circuit on the board may have gone. if you remove the cluster you can put a supply to the bulb circuit (carefully) and check if it is the circuit. If it's ok you can run a new feed to the cluster from your lights. Job done.

Brake and backup lights check good, but no lights, fuses good

Did you check to see whether or not the bulbs need replaced? Although it would be weird to have all the rear lights blow at once unless it shorted out somehow. I would also check under the hood for a blown fuse in the relay box.

Backup lights not working at all

That is your problem, the backup switch, it is on the side of the transmission.

No backup lights. Bulbs are all fine, fuses also.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Additionally check the reverse switch and its wiring/connectors. The reverse switch is located at the transmission. This is also part of the neutral start switch assembly. This page would give you additional insight.

Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.
