I ran across this problem with another vehicle....try putting it in another position (2 wheel high, 4 wheel high) and rocking it from drive to reverse, drive to reverse. Also try backing up at a pretty good clip and stepping on the brakes hard.....hope this works for you.

try putting it in neutral and pressing the 2 wheel button, if this doesnt work try the rocking, and backing up part......

1996 K 1500 with manuel four wheel floor shift will work in four low but will not work in four high (what could be the problem). Dan

so the front driveshaft turns in 4 low? or you just feeling gear reduction in 4 low?if the front drive shaft will not turn in 4 or 4low then suspect a shift fork broken. when i say turn i mean under engine power.

Start truck shift into neutral. Push button for 2 wheel or 4 wheel high. Should go into that range. If not you have other issues to discuss with us.

4 wheel drive doesn't work. when i put it in 4 low it engages the engine but not the wheels and 4 high doesn't work at all. thanks ian

Try installing manual Warren hubs this will correct the problem they cost about two hundred dollars but worth knowing your 4 wheel drive is working when you want. You will have to lock them in on the outside front but I did this, what an improvement it will make in working when you want.

When should i use 4 wheel hi on 1996 chevy k1500

use 4 wheel high only on slippery surfaces like icey roads dirt roads mud etc. can go as fast as you want [not recomended on slippery surfaces]
low is only for hard pulling like towing something up a hill or climbing steep grades

When push button for 4 wheel drive the front end want ingage and the button just keeps flashing

Have you tried putting it in Neutral, then selecting 4-low. That's what we have to do on our 2000 Chevy Blazer. Same with going from 4-low to 4-high or 4-low to 2 high. It will shift from 2-high to 4 high on the fly (not in Neutral) and back.

If your sure it is acually going into gear than check the auto hubs, they go bad alot. also you can with help from a 2nd person jack the truck up all 4wheels put the truck in 4x4 and drive and see if both drive shafts spin if they do its the hubs if the front one doesnt, its the transfer case

1994 K1500 4 Wheel Drive Issue

No probably not, first check the fuse for the 4wd in the fuse box if that's OK its likely the actuator on the front axle..........providing the shifter handle moves to the proper location and if its push button the lights light in the switch when selected...the actuator plugs into the wiring harness and screws into the front differential.an easy remove and replace part even for a novice.
