First problem is the truck shifts into four wheel drive but wont shift out it just keeps clicking in the dash and under the truck second problem is when its in four wheel drive it make kind of a clicking grinding noise when you turn and when you slow down could it just be the cv axle shafts
I had a similar problem, only it would not engage. I had my mechanic look at it. He said that there is a pin that when a lever is moved the pin engages the 4x4. My pin sheared off. He replaced it and now it works great.

could be two problems one the solinoid in the transmission is stuck but this is electric it is not machanical if your four wheel drive is stuck there is a solinoid that controls that also that solinoid also controls the light switch that tells you that you are in four wheel drive...
first check all fuses for that are fuses on most trucks
most are in the box under the hood also check each relay
if everything is good (check the solinoid to see if it is getting electric if it is then replace the solinoid
my 99 jimmy shifts into 4lo all the time.
1. Turn truck off
2. set parking brake
3. start truck and shift into neutral
4. push 2hi button(should shift back)
put back in park,release brake
might work for you
I also have a 2002 Envoy. Shifting to and from 4wh and 4wa can be done on the fly but shifting to 4wL has to be done stoped and while in neutral. Try that. Otherwise I'm afraid its a new computer for you. Its located under the left rear seat and you need a loan for one.
those are engaged by vacuum on the pass. side on the fender well under the hood there is a diaphragm that will pull in when put in 4x4 many times the vacuum lines get old and crack or get pulled off. The lines go to the transfer case and to the vacuum canister as well as the diaphragm on the fender well. If you have a vacuum leak it will cause it not to pull so if your vents don't change over good you have a leak elsewhere and that needs to be fixed. I don't like the vacc. engaged 4x4 but when it works it is a light weight shift on the fly design that you don't have to worry about the shift motors getting stuck or corroded.
Your transfer case could be locked up. Try pulling the shifter motor (servo) off of the transfer case and manually shifting the vehicle into 4x4. Make sure to block the wheels as it will roll if you shift into neutral. If you cant shift it, you need to have a professional look at the insides of your transfer case.
