When was fuel filter last changed, if not for a while, that's a good place to start. Are you getting any trouble codes, check engine lights, service engine lights? may be smart to stop by autozone & have free scan done for codes then go from there.

Transmission is likely reacting to poor engine performance. Check cap, rotor & wires...Check fuel filter (if they haven't been changed in a really long time, don't even look...just change them). If you find nothing unusual, check codes (if any)
I think you most likely have an ignition problem at this point but you have to do some "hands on" checking to determine what's going on...
Good luck

hint 2:
make sure the tranny ground stap is not broken.
if it is, it will never ever shift right or reliably
true for just about any TCM car.
see one guy last week bought new tranny ,and never used
a voltmeter on the solinoids. had 12v casing.. a shame.

How to put a 95 or 96 jeep cherokee sport in 4 wheel drive. handle is left of the gear shift.

You can change on the run but as a general rule stop to change to 4wd.except 2wd to 4wd high.Just slow down to about 15mph and back off the gas.
2wd high is normal running
4wd high(is full time 4wd)this is slippery roads or muddy roads.
4wd high lock For bad and slower slippery and rocky roads.
4wd low lock is for extreme 4wd conditions
Don't use the last 2 on the main roads or transfercase will be damaged
Hope this helps

1996 Jeep Cherokee Sport bogs down

I just posted a simular resonse in another post. What is sounds like it that the fuel pump is starting to go bad. When it heats up after use the pressure drops not pusing the full amount of fuel. Whenits cold it works fine until it heats back up 10-20 mins. remember fuel in the tank helps cool the pump so keep it soewhat full but sounds like the damage is done. your probally gonna have to replace it.
