The hand brake on this model can be adjusted from inside the car. Where the handbrake is in the center console, the plastic around it can be taken off. There is a screw on each side that needs to come out, and then from there just pull up, and twist it around and up from the parking brake. Set it aside along with the screws. On the inside you will see what looks like a long gold colored screw, t his is for the tension adjustment. Part of it should have a hex head that you can fit a wrench on. My 03 Hyundai uses a 12mm wrench. Keep turning it towards the passenger side occasionally pulling up on the hand brake to test the tension. Once the tension feels tight but not too tight that's it and you are done. You should be able to pull up on the hand brake about 3-4 clicks and that would be appropriate tension...

Hi from the uk may i offer this advice? considering year of car it would be best to check condition/wear of rear brakeshoes first? then if still good ? the rear brakes are auto adjust and can be adjusted manually whilst you have drums off? your problem with excess travel on handrake may be the auto adjusters are not operating ?due to stiff? when you adjust rear brakes and refit drums you will find h/brake travel will have decreased also your footbrake will improve making braketravel less ? do not adjust the h/brake cable untill you carry out the above if you req further info/help e mail back the above instructions are easy diy if you are confident ? hope this helps you ?

How to adjust handbrake

If you remove the center console you should be able to get at your adjusting screw. The end of the brake cable where it attaches to the brake handle will usually have a large threaded area for adjustment with an adjustment nut and a jamb nut. Simply loosen the jamb nut and set the desired cable tension with the adjustment nut and tighten the jamb nut back down. Then replace the console. If you are unable to get the desired tension at the cable you might have worn brake shoes that need replacing.

remove the rear drums then inspect and manually adjust the shoes auto adjuster ,clean the lip off on the outside of the drum so the shoes just about allow the drum on ,this is the correct way not screw the cable setting up to max ,do it my way and the brake pedal will be hard as you have reduced the reserve travel and the handbrake will have two /three clicks ,when you do this make sure the rear brake shoes which have trhe handbrake lever ,make sure this lever is right back if not slacken the handbrake cable to allow the cable to come back in case some weekend mechanic or a dealer fitter has tightened the cable only ,the former as they dont know and the later because their on bonus payment

How do you adjust the handbrake on a 1996 Peugeot 306 XR Hatchback ?

Handbrake is normally mechanically connected to
the brakes by steel cable 1/8 inch thick. At the end of the cables are bolts with adjusting nuts to adjust the handbrakes. These nuts must be adjusted to have an equal tension on the brakes, otherwise, swerving may result. It is advised to have a mechanic todo this job.

Replace rear brakes adjust handbrake

The hand brake hardly ever needs ajusting. See your hand brake mechanincly spreads your rear brake shose inside the drum. Therefore just replace your rear shoes and make sure there ajusted right and you should have no more problems with that part of your car. PS make sure you put some 3M paste on the contact points on your backing plate to avoid a squeak in the near future.
