dear Jackabea, we've managed the oil change now as I found some instructions on the internet but it seems that a dip stick for the transmission was not fitted as standard! hawever we're still left with the problem that the car doesn't want to change out of first(reverse and park are ok). any ideas? cheers!

Hello, Check the kickdown switch that is located on the floor below accelerator pedal. Pull the carpet back under the pedal and you will see a black switch with a 2 pin connector. Disconnect the switch and see if this helps. If it does help, your kickdown switch is stuck in the down position and needs replacement. This will cause it not to shift until you are at a high RPM.
If you find this information to be correct would you please enter a "fixya" rating.

How do i check transmission oil auto gear box merc 2001 s320 please thank you

most likely you don't have a dipstick, like mine, SLK 2.3, I asked the garage to dip it with their special multi dipstick, f o c, nice garage, the only other thing I would suggest is get the transmission fluid changed by a garage, silly not having a dipstick if you ask me

This vehicle will have no doubt covered a lot of miles and the auto transmissions on them are not, in any event, particularly durable (just complex and expensive). Some are inadequately serviced and, in these cases, the life is even shorter.

The problem you are experiencing is an indication that the transmission is dying and in due course you can anticipate total failure. As it is, it is not really drivable.
The only fix is to replace the transmission with a rebuilt one which will be very expensive. Some auto transmissions in this model have also had serious computer control problems but in your case, from what you have said, I believe it is wear and tear of the transmission components.

Unfortunately, if you own one of these cars with significant miles on it, you can expect to have significant and expensive mechanical issues to rectify to keep the car running and roadworthy.

E200 Auto 1997 model, jerks when the gear shifts automatically.

It looks like you need to overhaul your tranny, perhaps change the filters only or worst, the solenoid.Since its happening only once a while, perhaps a transmission oil change may solve the problem, but ultimately I believe you'll still have to replace those clogged up filters in your gearbox
