Question about 1986 Buick Regal

75 Stingray stalled while driving

I took my car out the other day, started fine, ran fine for about half a block when the engine just cuts out. No weird sounds just turned off. Couldnt get it to start back up (engine cranked just didn't turn over) so I had a friend tow me home. The next day I tried to start it up again and it ran just fine. Drove it hard for about 15 mins before taking it home. Decided to check the distributor right after (incase some moisture had gotten in there since it had been raining the past few days) to clean the contacts, put it back together and it didnt want to start again. Replaced the distro coil and that didnt help. So the next day I put the disto back together and it started fine again. So I've been talking to people and 2 things seem to stick out. Either the distro is causing me to lose spark thru a a faulty wire or my engine is flooding. Any thots?

Thanks alot for ur response. After I read ur post I looked up more info on ICM's about what they do and how they behave when they're going bad. Pretty much sounds exactly like what Im going thru.

**No spark when it was acting up (We couldnt find a spark when we were trouble shooting)

**Engine cuts out/stalls when driving then won't start back up for awhile but cranks like its trying to

**ICM's cause can act up intermittently, which is how mine was and that also explains why it passed the bench test at the auto shop. Read a post that said that was a common happening

I'm going to go buy the ICM but I think I'll wait till it decides to act up again and install the new one on the spot just so I know that was the problem and not mistake it for something else. So I guess I'll stick to short non-highway trips for a few days. Thanks again, I hope this will be my fix.

Sounds like the ICM is going bad.(Unless for some weird reason you have points)It is locate inside the distributor.

I had the same problem on my firebird after it was parked for 3 months, the heat grease just broke down and allowed it to over heat.

You should also check the fuel screen on the fuel inlet.

Please rate this a fixya

Computer (PCM)

Someone is going to have to use a lab scope to determine where that glitch is originating from. It can be very difficult.

Car stalling out and bot starting after being driven for awhile.

mcdevito75 Here, It"s possible the ignition Module is going bad, no way to test and if so, one day the car will not start at all.----------It can also be a vapor loc, wher the fuel is evaporating before it reaches the cylinders. Best Bet, have your local shop check both these items.

2002 Jetta 1.8t cuts offs sporadically

Here is the common cause of surges, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.
