Can I replace the oil cooler seals on 1980 Vanagon w/ engine in?

My engine is leaking oil through the seals on the oil cooler of my 1980 (air-cooled) VW Vanagon. How do I get to these two seals to replace them without pulling the engine?
I've pulled the oild filter and filter housing underneith, and have pulled just about everything on top that is in the way of the shrouding tin. The last two screws are underneith the firewall.
Even if I get the shrouding tin off the top, however, it looks like there's not enough room between the oil cooler and the fan housing to replace or re-seat these leaking seals.
Can it be done without dropping the engine?

Hi!
I hate to rub salt in your wounds but after all your effort the time spent you could have the engine back in by now.
All the tin ware needs to be lifted well clear as you know the oil cooler is upright in the path of the Rotor/fan, this also needs to be raised well clear as the cooler needs to be taken off completely, you will want to clean surfaces and internals won't you?
So all shrouds to bodywork off,(Engine bay) throttle cable disconnected, clutch cable disconnected your generator wires off and finally fuel pipe. 4 bolts on gearbox bell housing and slide engine out or down for clearance on trolley jack.
All the above relates to a TypeII Split or bay window with stock engine, Not suitcase or injection.

let car cool down clean oil cooler make sure no oil visible. start engine keep looking see were oil is leaking from use torch or lamp if nessesary

97 vw golf 1.8 there is a squar box where oil filter fastens to. oil is leaking from top of this box. what is this box and how i fix the leak?


The box is the oil cooler. The oil is most likely leaking from the oil cooler seal. The oil cooler is the square aluminum piece that the oil filter screws onto. To replace the seal, remove the filter, remove both coolant hoses that attach to the cooler, remove the nut that secures the cooler to the block and slide the cooler off the tube. Replace the rubber o-ring seal which is available at the VW dealer. It's inexpensive. Replace everything in reverse order. Good luck

Leaky transmission fluid. possible reasons?

Oil in coolant . oil cooler bad but which one


Oil generally will get into the coolant due to a headgasket leaking, or a cracked head.

You'll need to pressurize both systems (OIl & Cooling) to try & determine where the leak is coming from. .

Antifreeze in the oil can cause the pistons to sieze in the cylinders and if you've got oil in the anti-freeze, you more than likely have anti-freeze in the oil, or soon will.

This is probably a head gasket problem and not an oil cooler problem.

The oil cooler is fairly easy to test.

Remove the cooler from the engine but do not disconnect cooling lines and then pressurize the cooling system. You can use a radiator test tool to put pressure on the cooling system and look for leaks. If it leaks, replace it.

You may also be able to bypass the oil cooler altogether if it leaks.

The head gasket is another story.

Get a 1/4" pipe to spark plug fitting and put a male air coupling fitting in it.

Then you can charge the cylinders with air from your compressor.

Make sure each cylinder that you test is at top dead center so that the valves are closed.

If air bubbles into your coolant, you found your problem.

If air leaks out your intake you have a bad intake valve

If air leaks out your exhaust you have a bad exhaust valve etc.

Oil cooler seal


There are two items that can be leaking oil there. There is a gasket between the oiler cooler flange (the item attached to the engine), and the rubber gasket/seal that goes between the cooler and the flange. (the latter is the one that leaks most often as most oil change shops over tighten the oil filter).
I just replaced the gasket between the cooler and flange recently. I chose to do it quick and dirty: 1. remove oil filter 2. remove oil filter nipple (the portion you screw the filter onto) 2a. you'll need a deep well socket to get the bolt that holds the cooler tight (I believe 27mm)
2b. pull down the cooler, Grab the nipple with a pair of pliers between the flange and cooler and loosen/remove
3. remove old gasket/seal and clean surface 4. put new seal/gasket in place 5. re-seat the nipple back in. use the pliers method, just make sure you don't scar the threads where you NEED them( you don't need all of them). 6. put some gasket sealer (oil friendly) on the gasket and make sure its in place 7. tighten oil cooler onto flange with large nut and socket 8. replace oil filter and add oil as needed.
it is a tight working area, expect some scrapped knuckles, but it isn't too difficult.

Water pumps can stall out, but do you have air trapped in system.
Had you recently had the system "open" to replace hose, thermostat, temp sensor. Some Ford and GM have a bleeder screw on a high point in cooling system to bleed out trapped air.

Check your trans fluid color. Since the trans cooler is built into radiator (automatics)

IF the engine is overheating the trans CAN overheat
IF the trans is overheating the engine CAN overheat

They share the same cooling source and trans fluid gets hotter than oil, but yet it has a wimpy cooler built into radiator. Maybe add trans oil cooler to system.

Also outside temp affects the cool down rate of the radiator, ie...hot air trying to cool down hot radiator/engine is less effecting than cool air cooling hot radiator/engine
