Question about 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier

2000 Chevrolet Cavalier 2.4 liter 4 cylinder engine noise

I have a 2.4 liter engine in my 2000 Cavalier. My son let it run very low on oil, with about 1 quart left in the crankcase. The oil was topped up. A very noticeable heavy ticking sound is coming from the top of the motor, almost like a bad lifter tick. No noticeable blue smoke and the spark plugs look normal when pulled (not wet, slightly black). Compression down in #3 cylinder (about 85 PSI vs 135-150 in the others). Car can be driven but sounds awful. Local garage says change the motor, but didn't test amything. Being a double overhead cam, does the 2.4 liter quad 4 have lifters? What should I do?

If you don't live in a cold climate consider using 30 to 50 weight oil. will keep it quiet and keep the oil pressure up but that's about all.

There are no Lifters in the Dual Overhead Cam Motors. Once these 2.4 Liters start Tapping, It is just a Matter of time Before they Stop. I had to Replace one not very long ago for a Customer with the Same Problem. Please Rate my Solution, I need all the Help that I can Get! Thanks!

2.4 litres have lifters, just like the 2.3 litre know as the quad 4 motor, throw some Lucas Oil Stabilizer into the motor, if it continues then this would be mechanical problem and needs to be taken to mechanic, sorry for wrong info you were given, and whatever you do, do not run anything other then 5w30, or 10w30

Oil light stays on at idle shuts off when driving

my first guess would be oil pump. if the pressure got low enough to make noises and lose power like that..
dont run it anymore until its looked at, damage may already have been done to the engine cylinders/bearings.. you may be saved by low pressure cutoff sensor, i hope so.. good luck

Check the under fender. Sometimes the black plastic will come loose around the wheel area. Turn your wheels to the left and see if the tire are rubbing close to any part of the fender area.

How to put a 3.8 liter in a 2000 cavalier

You can not put a 3.8 liter in to a 2000 cavalier, but you can put in a 3.4 liter. The 3.8 liter is to wide and will not fit the engine bay, the 3.4 can fit but tight and to replace the rear spark plugs. Your going to have to drop the engine again, if not rotate it forward to get enough room. First thing to do is measure the cavalier's engine cradle and fabricate the engine mounts using the engine cradle from the 3.4 liter . Once you have that, test fit to the engine clip on the cavalier with the 3.4. After the test fit, your going to have to fabricate the wheel bearing to take the bigger CV joints and may have to rebuild the CV joints to get the proper lengths. The accessory items i think are find where they are and the steering racks are fine, the other thing you may want to do is add a transmission cooler since the radiator will be taxed already to keep the 3.4 cooled unless your planing to go with the 5 speed which is a smaller transmission then the automatic as long as your downer car is a 5 speed so you don't have to worry about the lines to the clutch. Other then that, it's juts a transplant or the ECM and wire harness. The OEM dash gauge will work fine with the ECM. If there is a auto body shop around you, you can ask them for the engine mount measurements to the 3.4 on the cradle and the engine mount measurements on the cavalier with the 2.2 liter or what ever 4 cylinder you have. The other thing you can do also is spend $2000.00 for a turbo kit that just bolts right up which would get your car back on the road in 6 hour then 3 weeks if not longer. Good luck and keep me posted.

I cant figure out the right order of the plug

Firing Order on 2.2 liter: 1-3-4-2
Cylinder number: 1-2-3-4 from passenger to driver's side
From the coil from fire wall to radiator: #1 coil 4-1 #2 coil 3-2 Good luck and this should help you get your car running 100% again.

Oil leaks

First of all, which engine does your cavalier have? Some GM engines around that time had problems with the intake manifold gasket leaking oil where the manifold bolted to the top of the engine block, but if I remember correctly, it was in the 3.1 liter V-6 engines. If your car has a 4 cylinder engine, I am not aware of any inherent oil leak problems.
BTW, if your oil light has been on for 2 weeks, without your adding any oil, you probably have more serious problems than just an oil leak by now. Maybe not a solution, but it's a place to start.
