Have had auto to dealer for rough idle problem 3 times and to date they unable to locate or clear problem. Had cleaned fuel system cleaned pe3r advice dealer. No change..Found cracked engine mount and they presumed this problem..Replaced engine mounts and idle still rough and when air cond. on gets much worse. At time can stop and idle smooth as silk and then for some unknown reason get rough idle again (when idle rough, very heavy vibration steering column felt). Dealer di feul inf service, throtle and induction svc. Totally lost at this point as to what could be problem and presently, dealer has no idea why idle is so rough as all reading and test check good...Any suggestions. Is it possible I could have a vacum leak somewhere??

checking coil pack made no change..idle problem
still exists and at times erratic..idle extremely bad when have air conditioner on.
Times can come to stop and idle very smooth hardly know engine running and can go to next light and idle can change and become extremley
rough (will feel heavy vibration in steering wheel)

engine mounts changed. All beltts checked by dealer. Do not know if speed control valve cleaned along with throttle valve

  • wdzierz Jan 30, 2009

At dealership, had complete fuel injection service.Throttle and induction service..Fuel system was dirty. Flush fuel injectors, cleaned throttle body and complete induction service. When computer scanned when originally took to dealer, there were no codes they monitored dada stream found idle air counts low. They check system, found also found excessive choking this is when they recommended fuel system service to clear idle problem.

  • wdzierz Jan 30, 2009

Don't believe fuel injector problem..Deal also stated they not the problem..This came on to fast not over period of time and erratic..Idle is fine when engine cold..Normal operating
temperature when start noticing and ride start to become bit rough. At speeds 40-45 miles an hours no vibration or roughness experiencd. Like it never existed

in Tampa FL..quite ways to get to another dealer..There is another in vicinity but is owned by same party. Might try some independents and see if they any better. I'm sure there is fix but find right people to handle without giving me the national debt with bills is another story.

If high milage then check timing. Other thing to check. PCV valve, throttle sensor, MASS airflow sensor, (vacuum leak-Always a suspect of idel problem.) Also check your exhaust to see if it flows right because catylitc converter could be stopping up.

Have a check done on your MAP sensor. It's the Manifold Absolute Pressure sensor. If it is partially colgged, it will act up from time to time and cause engine problems like this.

It may sound stupid but, stert your car in a dark area. Look for sparking between the spark plug wires and between the wires and the engine. If you see any sparks, shut off the engine and move the wire away from the item it's sparking too. This will cause misfires. If you do see sparking, you should replace your wires. The insulation is broken down and allows leakage. This happens on wires that have a few years on them or it the car gets run a lot. The heat and any oil that might have gotten onto the wires will deteriorate the insulation, even though they may look perfectly good. The only other way to check the wires is with a tester called a megger and I don't know of any garages that have one of these. athey are normally used to sheck the insulating qualities inside an electric motor.

Re: "At time can stop and idle smooth as silk and then for some unknown reason get rough idle again"

If you have rough idle only from time to time, then it probably means that one of cylinders is int firing up.

Check distribution, spark plugs and timing, and also clean injectors.

Welcome to Fixya! I know that this will sound Dumb But, Change your Gas Cap. If the Seal is bad on the Gas Cap it will allow air to enter the Fuel Tank and Fuel Pump Causing the Rough Idle. Please Rate My Response! Thanks!

Simple solution: get some carb cleaner. remove the air filter housing and spray some carb cleaner into the airbell work the flap till it closes properly. The gum and varnish won't let the air bell seat and the throttle body is sucking air. Try it.

  1. A large vacuum leak can lean the air/fuel mixture out to such an extent that an engine will idle rough or not idle at all.
  2. An EGR valve that is stuck open at idle can have the same effect as a vacuum leak.
  3. So too can a loose positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) hose, a leaky PCV valve or the wrong PCV valve (one that flows too much air for the application).

The rough idle in all of these cases is caused by "lean misfire." The fuel mixture is too lean to ignite reliably so it often misfires and fails to ignite at all. Lean misfire will show up as elevated hydrocarbon (HC) readings in the exhaust, which may be enough to cause a vehicle to fail an emissions test.

Soundlike yu need new fuel injectors, thats pretty much the worst problems those engines ever have, the part is about $300 but alot of labor.

Try cleaning the throttle body with throttle cleaner and tooth brush. Remove the cover first. Soot builds up in this area causing the flap to stick resulting in rough idle.

I'd check out the coil pack and wires... pull one wire at a time and if you pull one and the motor doesn't change you have found the problem.

Have u changed all the engine mounts?, if not do so they get hard from age and transmit vibration, has the cam belt been checked for excessive play? excessive play causes whipping in the belt and rough idle. this can cause rough idle, has the idle speed control valve been cleaned along with the throttle valve?

My 1996 eagle talon tsi (just bought) idles rough but when I drive its smooth, no rough idle. I need to know what is wrong with it and how to fix it

It may be a dirty air cleaner or a dirty Idle Airflow Valve . The IAC can be cleaned by taking off the duct work that goes from the air assembly to the fuel injector hole. The valve is to one of the sides of the hole just inside. You will see two small holes. Buy some card cleaner and with your engine running at about 1300 rpm spray the cleaner directly into these holes. Spray for a good 10 seconds. Stop the engine and let the cleaner soak in. Repeat this about 4 times. If it still idles rough it may be the Idle position sensor or you have to replace the IAC.

Cannot find the thermostat

What does the thermostat have to do with it idling rough? Check your plugs and wires, make sure your throttle body is clean, make sure you don't have any vacuum leaks, and make sure your motor mounts are good. The thermostat should be located at the end of the upper radiator hose by the engine though.

U DON'T HAVE A CARBURETOR SO FORGET THAT, THE FUEL REGULATOR WOULD NOT CAUSE THIS PROBLEM. I AM A GM FACTORY TECH AND KNOW THIS WITH CERTAINTY. U COULD HAVE SLUDGE IN THE IDLE SPEED CONTROL AIRBYPASS VALVE.

Rough idle sometimes stalls when idling stalls when the gas is let up

Check and clean the Idle control valve (IAC). It is located inside the fuel system compartment. remove the air duct work from the system. Look inside the fuel system and you will see some holes on the sides of the wall. Buy some carb cleaner. With the engine running at 1200 rpms or so, spray cleaner aiming at the holes . These are from the IAC. Spray continuously for about 10 seconds. Turn off engine and let the cleaner soak in. Repeat the process a few times. If that does not work remove the IAC . Clean and reinstall. If it still does not work rplace the IAC.
