Question about 1986 Pontiac Firebird
I just bought the car. it stays on so long as i keep opening the throttle but only for a few seconds. when this happens i hear a knocking like one of the cylinders it out. it was running fine before the previous owner left town and had her sitting for a year.
Since it is a older car might invest in wires, plugs, cap and rotor, then set the choke on the probably Rochester 2 bbl. the knock you hear might be a lifter that has lost its prime, another words once you get it running for a few minutes it will prime up and stop clicking

Could be a stuck valve. That would explan the knocking
