Hi there!
Well, the other day it dropped down to -20F, and we had a starter problem. The starter hsd been working fine in cold temperatures and did so last year.
However, this time, the starter would not disengage once the engine fired, making expensive grinding noises. It was shut off after three short duration tries, and now that the temperature has risen to +30F, it seems ok.
To prevent this from occurring when (not if, when) the weather again deteriorates, what should be done? Years ago, more tradional machines would replace the solenoid. Stil hold true?
Thank you,
Dan Hudson

- Ok, will consider it. Aftermarket starters are around $100, which with today's dollar isnt' that much. I would only hate to waste the whole stater, as it works fine otherwise.
MR. Hudson,
Yes this is true, you still can replace just the solenoid on most starters. Now depending on what kind of starter you have dictates weather you can replace just the solenoid or the whole thing. Being you have to take the starter out it should be replaced any way but in the economy today I would not blame you if you did not.
