Question about 2004 Toyota Sequoia

Tries to start by itself

I have a 2004 Sequoia that is in the shop right now with a reoccurring problem. The vehicle will try to slightly turn over with no key in it. I don't even have remote start! They have racked their brains and finally after a starter and other things, they now say it is the "Neutral safety switch", Can any body help me out?

The car was trying to turn over without the key in it and I had to have it towed in.
The turning over was intermitant and was increasing in frequency and I think it burned out the starter, so the dealer replaced it a few months ago. I had to disconect the battery cable to get it to stop.I couldn't even start it on my own until I disconnected the battery and reconnected it. The Radio antenna stopped comming up briefly but now it works. The dealer replaced somthing else but I'm not sure what. That seemed to work for a few months. They are now saying that the neutral safety switch has a short because when they disconnected it, it stopped trying to start itself. What now?

several years ago, uhaul installed an electric brake and a hitch. The dealer said it could have something to do with the problem but the never seem to do anything with it. I told them to diconnect it if they thought it was a problem.

You have a shorted starter solenoid or a shorted ignition switch. Unplug the small wire at the solenoid and hook up the battery cable. if it still tries to start, then the solenoid is shorted. If it doesn't, then plug the small wire in and if it starts, then the ignition switch is shorted.
Good Luck

The starter relay is stuck on. or you have a short in the ignition switch itself.

in that case it is something in that circuit... but i doubt it's the switch itself

The Neutral Switch is NOT the issue. Trust me. You probably have a bad ignition switch, or an issue that is acting negatively on the body controller. Please advise of what is installed that is not "factory"... Thanks.

  • Toyota Ed Jan 30, 2009

OK. The Neutral switch does one thing. It allows the vehicle to start in Park or Neutral. Nothing more. I cannot "start" the vehicle, in any way, shape or form. If your dealer is telling you this, he is not cognizant of the above description of the NS switch. I still think that you have something that is transferring power to the B+ on the starter magnet terminal.

  • Toyota Ed Jan 30, 2009

I would tell your mechanic to look at the "Field" wire at the starter, and trace it back for a power crossfeed issue. This is not a common problem.

I am very glad to have been of some assistance. Thanks. But, you gave the FixYa to my esteemed collegue. That's OK.

The neutral safety switch wouldnt make it try to start on its own. in fact it would sorta have the opposite effect. it may be an ignition problem of some sort but as i said it would not be the neutral safety switch

I tried to start my sequoia while being jumped all it did was continuously click what is that a sign of

It can be either a very dead battery, since a very dead battery can cause even the best jump start to load down to where you won't get enough starting current, or a bad starter. Check the cells of the battery for water. If there are any empty or dry cells, fill them. When you hook up to the jump vehicle, let that vehicle run and charge your battery for 5-10 minutes and try again. IF there is improvement, it is probably the battery. If not, I would suspect the starter.

Not shifting on accelleration

Start by ensuring fluid level for transmission is correct. Is the check engine light on? If so, the transmission control module may have code stored in it to point you in the right direction. You can also try disconnectint/reconnecting battery which will reset transmission module. If problem corrects itself, keep driving to see if it reoccurs. If problem occurs immediately, recommend transmission diagnostics b efore costly repairs develop

What is causing the front end noise while in a hard turn (left or right) on my 2004 Toyota Sequoia?

The power steering pump capacity on some motor vehicles is unable to sustain full flow for more than a few seconds which could account for the noise which is the pump 'cavitating'. You might check the power steering reservoir fluid level in any case and read your car handbook for any warnings. I once owned a Mitsubishi Magna which had this limitation.

I think you need to try this in park not neutral-keep your foot on the brake, and put the shifter in park, then try turning the wheel slightly, and turn the ignition key.

Cruise goes off when left or right signal is used.

you may need to change your signal/cruise control device. You may try an auto recycling center.
Remove the positive wire from the battery
remove screws at the back of the airbags. Don't worry, you disable them when you remove power,
With a socket 1/2in drive and maybe an 18 or 20 remove steering wheel
Once the wheel is remove you should see your signal/cruise device.
You could go to your local auto store and buy a book or online www.hayes.com and it will help with the procedure

Take it back to who did the brakes, there is a brake,or brakes locking down, and holding the wheel from turning, you may need a new brake hose,or caliper.

2006 toyota sequoia, upon turning the ignition, there is a clicking noise, rough start but the car does turn on, the battery meter goes right to the mid point, therefore I don't think it is the battery....

a hard click, each time u try to start until the conatcts on the starter meet then it spins. Starter bad , but if u know how to take the cover off the solenoid u can see the replaceable contacts (usually just one side worn) and u could purchase at a starter rebuild shop and fix it for under $12.00

2004 toyota sequoia front end shake

Replace the front rotors.
Refacing does not work on Sequoias. The metal removed to get the rotor "true" is usually below minimum safe thickness, and the vibration comes right back when it gets hot.
