The code that came up will tell you what sensor/ servo/ solenoid needs attention. Forget the starter suggestion. Most probably if it has a transmission code it would be a transmission control module . Come back in a comment as to the code so that we may be able to help you with suggestions as to where the shop should look.

Our 1999 camry has a transmission leak the mechanics advised just making sure the fluid is replaced consistently as the car has 220000 miles on it and replacing the transmission isn't advisable - however...

the dipstick may be red or yellow coloured
where is the transmission leaking
if it is a pipe or hose it can be replaced
if it is a housing seal that will not take long
if it is a torque converter seal --well that will take a little longer
you don't have to replace a transmission to fix a leaking seal

Does 1999 toyota camry come with an oil level sensor

Hello. Welcoem to FixYa.

Unfortunatly, the answer is no.

Toyota does not fit oil level sesnors to any of its passenger automobiles.

The only Toyota product that did have an oil level sensor installed was the Previa model.

Gear oil ran out while changing axle on 2005 camry, how do i put some back in?

If this is an automatic transmission, just add the fluid through the transmission dipstick tube.
Be sure to check the level while the engine is idleing and at operating temperature.

If this is a manual transmission, remove the fill plug halfway up the side of the transmission, and fill the fluid until it comes out the hole. Be sure the vehicle is level when doing this or you will overfill the transmission.

I have a 1992 toyota camry LE, 4 cyl. and the oil indicator light keeps flickering on and off, what is the problem. I have checked the transmission and the oil levels and they are all okay. Confused as to...

Is it an oil pressure light or an oil change light (check the owners manual) If its an oil change light it may be time to change the oil. If its an oil pressure light you could have a short to ground in the wiring or at the oil pressure sender mounted on the engine. Also are you checking the engine oil with the engine running or off. The transmission is checked with the engine running, engine oil with engine off. If it is low on oil it will intermittently flash. Also when you check the oil wait five to ten minutes after the engine stops to let the oil settle before checking or you may get false readings.
