Question about 1994 Toyota Tercel

1 Answer

Transmission just quit and will not move in any gear.

I have a 1991 Toyota Tercel with 60,000 miles. I changed the engine and was driving probably 30 miles when the tranny began to slip and then quit altogether. Is there an easy fix ........

Thanks, The tranny fluid is not low but I didn't check the modulator. Is it a common problem with these trannys? I'll let you know if it solves the problem...

If the vacuum hoses weren't connected properly would it prevent the tranny from working?

ok just remember if its not the modulator its going to wind up being the tranny itself and may not be worth sinking alot of money into due to the age of it.. think it through

yes it would keep the it from shifting right

Check all fluids and belts.Replace the timing belt.Change engine oil and filter, check air filter.Test the coolant for protection level. You may won't to change the transmission fluid and filter at this time but it's not required yet.Grease any fittings and check the level of gear oil in the drive lines.

Do I really need to flush the transmission?

Smell the fluid. If it's burnt it will smell burnt. 60,000 is the average. Depends on how you drive. You can run your trans till it quits or try and prolong it's life. Oil is cheep insurance, but it's your car and the final decision is up to you.

1999 Tercel. Timing belt/water pump interval change?

Hello tinaromano1: The factory specification are to replace the belt every 90,000 miles in severe service. I would recommend to replace at 90,000 no matter what the service would be. Keep in mind should the belt break there is always a chance engine damage may occur. Should you need further help just ask. Thank You for using FixYa. Roger

out of the top by the way these japenese take out motors are quite a good investment. Although word up change front and rear seals. then make sure they have the same timing belt and gears as the engine that is being replaced.

You should have had the transmission fluid changed at 30, 000 miles, and you should have the transmission flushed at 60,000.
Change the timing belt at 90, 000 miles (if you have a V-6).
Change the air filter every 15,000 miles.
Check the spark plug condition at 60,000, and change the coolant at 60,000.
