Question about 1992 Subaru Legacy

1 Answer

Engine will not start - (intermittent fault)

My 1992 Subaru Legacy will after a short run, sometimes refuse to start. The solution sounds crazy but works (so far). Lift the bonnet and wait for three or four minutes and turn the engine over. Normally the engine fires and off we go. The problem is unfortunately becoming more frequent and the waiting period seems to be getting longer. Having yesterday managed to get a sympathetic bystander to turn the engine over I found that there was no spark. My first inclination is to change the spark generator or the ecm coil. When the engine is running there is quite a healthy spark and I wonder if there is any other area which might inhibit the spark when starting.

First I would check the coil pack for good mounting and test. Then I would check ignitor. If still nothing check crank sensor. If motor is very dirty I would make sure sensor for crank and cam are clean and wires are in good condition. Hope this helps. Good luck and have a good day.

1992 Subaru legacy wagon will not shift up from first gear. it is an AT.

run the fault but all you describe is operated from the VSS sensor ( vehicle speed sensor)
it tells the cruise control the vehicle speed , tells the TCM the vehicle speed so that ratios can be changed, activates the speedo, and will report with a check engine light to report a transmission problem
run the fault codes first

1992 Subaru legacy ignition switch turns on but it doesnt give turning sound to start engine.

I've changed quite a few ignition switches on Subaru's after 150,000 miles. It could also be a bad connection at the starter (the small wire) or a bad starter.

Starts when cold

Sounds like a bad ignition system, if its firing poorly through your distributor once it warms up its not firing hot enough.

The check engine light comes on and the car either dies or runs ragged, then it clears up and runs fine. It is intermittant and happens mostly when slowing down/braking. Is there an obd way to find out...

Maybe you fixed this already, but it could be the alternator. It might not work intemittantly. I had same problem. Also be sure the battery cables are snug. I had problem with that too. Just about made me crazy.

My Subaru legacy grandwagon has started cutting out at idle speed (intermittently) & also sometimes if you go on a short errand then it wont start when you get back in the car. Engine turns over...

You could have a number of problems. First do a complete tune up, proper timing, new plugs etc.

Turn the key and do not give it gas. If it starts slowly give it gas and let me know what it does. I suspect it will cut out. In that case, you might have bad injectors. Let me know if I can be of further help

The Check Engine Light came on this morning in my 1992 Subaru Legacy L wagon. What possible problems can this be? I am in the process of trying to sell it.

dear friend-it is not to say that your problem is a big one, what you can do is to disconnect the battery for
a short while and then reconnect,if the lite stays away it"s not a problem,if it"s back hook up to a scanner for the fault code.

Intermittant engine check light comes on no problem with motor

A check eng lite will very seldom cause any drive-ability concern, you most likely have an intermittent fault like a O2 sensor, have Kragen run a self test for a trouble code, it's fun and it's free!
