Have you checked to see if the injectors are clogged? Also how are the glow plugs?

  • robert kious May 11, 2010

i have seen those be murder to bleed the air out. crack a fuel line (just the nut) at the cylinders to make sure you have fuel.

are you sure you have fuel at the injecters ?

I have a 96 2500 and i have found that if both batteries are not hooked up with a really good connection that the fuel shut off relay will not engage . it will just crank and crank with no start. it is located on the driver side of engine just about the center of the engine .its round and has a chrome rod coming out the bottom of it .it is mounted with the rod on the bottom .you can move it by hand but it will not lock in place unless you have the ignition switch in the start position. there is a couple of relays for it mounted on the fire wall .hope this helps someone

To dogy2003: 1995 Dodge Ram 2500's with Cummins Turbo Diesel do not have glow plugs

I agree with kious75, you need to get the air out of the injector lines. Has the truck ran AT ALL since the installation of the injector pump?

What type of additive did you put in the trucks fuel tank?

Have you replaced the fuel filter recently? Check the filter canister to see if fuel has been pumped in to it. (one way to check is to open the water/fuel seperator valve on the bottom of the fuel filter canister and see if there is any fuel or water in there)

I had a 1999 Dodge Ram 2500 with a 24V Cummins ISB engine and had trouble getting it to start. Had NO luck bleeding the injector lines. My truck was a 5-speed so I got it on dry level ground and had a friend pull me with his truck, I popped the clutch in 3rd gear and the truck cranked up beautifully. It is similar to the process you would go thru if you had an old 5-speed vehicle with a dead battery. The engine and fuel delivery system on my truck and your truck are different but similar. My problem was a bad "lift pump" which was about $150 to fix, but caused a $1500 injector pump failure. I was nervous about pull starting my truck but it worked... the truck always cranked up after that.

The starters on these trucks are also a common problem. Not only the starter but there is a very expensive starter relay that will go bad. I don't think a starter will fix the running problem but if the truck won't turn over at all I would check the batteries, the battery and starter cables, the starter and relay.

Is it possible that you have more serious internal engine problems with this truck? How many miles are on it? Has it been used as a Hot-Rod?

My 2002 chev. diesel truck turns over but wont start, new filter

anytime you change the filter in a diesel you have to bleed the air out of the fuel system. The pump won't auto bleed the fuel system for you. every place in the fuel system that has a flare type connection needs to be bleed, start at the connection closest to the tank, loosen the connection and then crank the engine until you see diesel fuel drips from that connection. Tighten the connection while the engine is still cranking. Move to the next connection that is going toward the engine. Continue on in that manner toward the engine until you reach the injector pump/injector. Once you reach the injector pump be VERY aware that the fuel is at VERY high pressure. Do NOT put your body parts in the stream of high pressure diesel fuel. It could kill or injure you! Once you bleed all the way to the injector pump/ injector, the truck SHOULD start. Do not bleed after the injector pump because of the pressure involved, it is WAY too dangerous.

Good luck!

Changed fuel pump but it wont start

Check for spark, if spark then spray start fluid into throttle body, if it starts check your fuel injectors with a noid light also check crankshaft position sensor. If the pump wont pump check the fuse and connection to the fuel pump for voltage.

Dodge cummins won't start, fuel reaching injector pump but no fuel coming out of injector pump.

You said you have fuel flowing from the inlet line of the injection pump? But not at the injector lines?

99 ram diesel wont start

Did you check to see if there is power to the glow plugs if not then that may be the problem and if there is power when you cycle the key not to start but for the plugs to warm up you may have a bad glow plugs.

Before changing fuel filter, truck would start loosing power and would not excede 2000 rpm's. I put diesel fuel additive and changed fuel filter and know it won't start. HELP please.

Did you bleed the fuel circuitery?

mostly :
- loose the fuel input connector at the injection pump.
- pump with the pump on the filterbracket.
- Once no air bubbles are seen anymore, tighten the connector again, while still pumping.
- Pump now till the pump is hard.
- With an aid starting: Loosen a bit max 1 turn ) injector tubes at the injectors. Once fuel is spitting out of a loosed connection, tighten it again. Engine will startd after 2-3 connectors retightened.

Take extreme caution not to put fingers on the lost connections, fuel under high pressure is very very harmfull!

Hope your are helped

Not starting

may be a weak fuel pump. my buddy was having a similar problem where his would stutter on a hill and it was the fuel pump. perhaps the injector pump also. not sure on that one but just a suggestion.

Hi,

Appreciate the direct "Ask Me".

To your concern:
  • Ramping, no start - is significant. it would indicate that possibly the low fuel was agitated due to the stiff angle and dirt, sand, sludge inside the tank was stirred and got inside the intake port of the fuel pump/filter;
  • Fuel Filter - to my knowledge, there is no actual separate filter. There is a screen incorporated into the fuel pump, or in some versions in the fuel pressure regulator. Both are on top of the tank. Looks like you have to bring the entire tank down and check the inside, pump, regulator. Additionally, it may help to use a carb/injector cleaner (pls select appropriate type gas or diesel) when filling up the tank so as to clean hopefully the fuel lines, injector pump, injector, combustion chamber and valves.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.
