Question about 1985 Chevrolet Corvette

Voltage drain 85 vette when I have heater and lights on I can watch volts gauge go under 12 volts, if I turn lights off volts climb back up 13 or 14 or visa versa

with the engine running use a volt meter to check battery voltage with the head lights on, should be around 14 volts on a 12 volt system, if 12 volts or less the regulator or alternator is at fault . if around 14 volts there is a drain or short, the battery could also be faulty.

Get a cigarette lighter voltage gauge and watch the voltage.

It should never go below 12 volts before you crank the engine, or after you turn it off. If it's above 13 volts after you shut it off and below in the morning, the battery is on it's way out.

Right after you start it, especially in the morning, the voltage should rise to 13.8 or 14.8 volts and then drop back down to 13.2 or 3 as you drive. If it doesn't you have a charging problem.

Definately remove and replace the cables to the battery, the problem is often the connection.

Your voltage goes down after you start the truck? Your voltage should climb up to 13.5-14 volts (at the battery terminals) with the truck running. If it does not climb to that area you have some kind of alternator problem.

ALTERNATOR COULD BE WEAK OR WRONG SIZE IN AMPS.NOT PUTTING OUT ENOUGH POWER.CHECK TO MAKE SURE POSITIVE BATTERY CABLE AND GROUND CABLES IN GOOD CONDITIONS.IF BATTERY CABLES IS BAD.THEY WILL CAUSE VOLTAGE PROBLEMS.

check for power to the starter solenoid, should be 12 volts, if 12 volts is present then you have a open circiut in the solenoid making it defective... check battery source voltage should be at least 12 volts first, check for any voltage drops between positive battery post and power lead on solenoid of starter... please rate my help, thanks...

Relay/resistor heater blower


There are two fuses for the fan. One is probably a 20 Amp in the fuse panel in the cab and marked "Heater". or "Heater/AC" The second is under the hood may be marked Heater, Blower, or Fan and should be 30 Amp. The one in the cab supplies switched 12 volts to the fan speed switch. The one under the hood supplies the 12 volts to the relay. The relay is normally energized by the 12 volts through the 20 Amp fuse in the cab and through the switch. I think you find that the fan has the normal speeds except for missing HI with the underhood fuse removed, and will turn off with the ignition that way. There is no hazard in operating it that way but you may want to replace the resistor/relay assembly before it gets too cold. The relay is a pretty trouble free device in most cases, maybe you can find a deal on a good one at a junkyard.

The whole idea with the relay under the hood started back in the Sixties believe it or not. There is considerable voltage drop in the wiring between the fan switch and the blower fan motor. By adding the relay under the hood right next to the motor, the voltage drop was reduced, both by the shorter wire, and by using heavier wire to boot. The motor gets really close to the full system voltage when the relay is closed. In your case where the relay keeps the fan running, it can drain a battery rather quickly too!
