You Must Put it UP On Jack Stands And Take Out the LOWER BOLT From Shock FIRST ,Drop Lower Control arm By Removeing Lower Ball Joint AND OUTER TIE ROD.There are are 3 Nuts On top where the Coil Spring Seats Remove Them, Remove Assembly The Same as A STRUT ASSEMBLY, YOU Must USE CAUTION Use Spring Compresion tool to Remove top Shock Nut. REVERSE PROCEDURE For Instalation. Hope this Helps ;;;;;;;;AS FOR TOOLS METRIC SET & THE ONLY 'SPECIAL TOOL" IS >> A COIL SPRING COMPRESSOR. BUT NOTHING ELSE OTHER THAN METRIC WRENCHES & SOCKETS

How to change front shocks

The old style shock is not hard to change. Its when you have struts that extra tools are needed.
There is a nut or two on the top of each shock stem. The second nut is often used as a locking device to keep the primary nut from backing off. Many do not use a second nut, but use a washer or lock washer to keep the primary tight.
The bottom fixtures usually have a pair of bolts holding the shock mounting plate to the "A" frame of the suspension.
Some Mechanics keep the weight of the vehicle on the "A" frame when changing the shocks to increase the clearance provided between the ground and the van(floor jack). A van on the hoist has exceptional clearance and it does not matter if the suspension hangs down, you still can fit the shock into its position.
Most nuts and bolts on the front are 9/16th or smaller. The rear shocks use larger bolts.
I would jack the vehicle and spray the backside of the lower bolts with WD-40 or similar a day before attempting to remove the bolts. Broken bolts are a pain, this one procedure could make removal easier. The bolts can easily break from rust.
There are sometimes Sales at Sears or Goodyear or Midas with free Installation. Shops use to charge $5-$10 each to install shocks.

How to change shock absorbers on a 1995 ford crown victoria. the nut on the front shock doesn't come off, it just keeps turning.

On the top of the shock shaft you will see a flat spot. You need to find a wrench or crescent wrench to hold the shock there while turning the nut. If these do not hold the shock still you will need to get a pair of vise grips.

Would like to know if i need any special tools to change the shocks on my 2000 for ranger

Dont believe so. Maybe gear wrenches just to make things a little quicker/easier. Also bring rust penetrant and maybe presoak all nuts a day before. Keep vehicle jacked up under front control arm(for front job) and rear axle when you do rear. This is to keep tension off of the shocks when trying to remove.
