Enegine has loud knocking noise in 2000 Honda Civic EX

The vehicle has 123,000 miles. The noise a sounds like something knocking... dont know if it is inside the engine or not. Not a ping. It has been making the noise for 1 1/2 -2 years. The noise is at it's worst when we crank it up and it is idling in park and when you put it into Drive and first accelerate. The timing belt was replaced a couple of years ago. It is an automatic transmission. We have been the only owner of the vehicle. We need to sell it, but I need to know what this knocking noise is and how to fix it!!

Yes. After it cranks and has sat for a bit, the knocking fades a little.... in neutral, you can barely hear the noise at all and after you get above appx 30mph or so, the knocking becomes pretty faint.

not low on oil. this is louder than the knocking noise you hear from being low on oil.

Check your flywheel bolt, it could be loose.

Do you know what a knock sensor is ?
The knock sensor (KS) system enables the control module to control the ignition timing for the best possible performance while protecting the engine from potentially damaging levels of detonation. The control module uses the KS system to test for abnormal engine noise that may indicate detonation, also known as spark knock.
If the control module has determined that knock is present, it will retard the ignition timing to attempt to eliminate the knock. The control module will always try to work back to a zero compensation level, or no spark retard. An abnormal KS signal will stay outside of the noise channel or will not be present. KS diagnostics are calibrated to detect faults with the KS circuitry inside the control module, the KS wiring, or the KS voltage output. Some diagnostics are also calibrated to detect constant noise from an outside influence such as a loose/damaged component or excessive engine mechanical noise
Do you know what spark knock is or pinging ? EGR valve problem ! Is your oil pressure low ? do you have a gauge or a oil light ! If it where an oil pump problem the light would be lit ! Is your check engine light lit ? How many miles on the vehicle ? Timing chain an gears , jumped time !

Flashing check engine light subaru forester

If there is a lot of ice then I would think that the coolant was iced up and the engine overheated as stated . The engine light is there to let you know that something drastic is about to happen to the engine and you should stop immediately , check the oil level and coolant level before driving any distance.

Engine is knocking needing to know anything and everything that could cause this. We just replaced the transmission a week ago and we have an O2 sensor out.

Engines can make many different noises and people will describe them as knocks, pings, rattles or thumps. A true "knock" is caused by rod or main bearings hitting against the crankshaft. The general cause of that is either too much space between the bearing and crankshaft or insufficient oil pressure to maintain the distance between the bearing and crankshaft. Sometimes you can use a heavier grade oil so that the oil doesn't leak out of the bearing space so quickly. If you're currently using 5 W 15, go to a 10 W 30 or maybe even a 15 W 50. If you can't make the noise go away with that, either the bearings are too worn or it's a different problem. If the engine has less than a couple hundred thousand miles, the only reason for bearings to go bad would be inadequate maintenance.

Other problems that can result in noises like that are:

Piston slap. That's when the skirt (lower part) of the piston is slightly worn and is enough smaller than the cylinder that the skirt "pops" from one side to the other as the engine runs. It's more of an annoyance than a real problem, especially since piston slap typically goes away as the engine warms up a little. It typically takes just a few seconds to go away. If it's piston slap don't worry about it until the engine is rebuilt. Piston slap is quite common among many of the GM 350's, especially in engines that go short distances a lot or don't get adequate maintenance.

Fuel "pinging". That's when the fuel ignites too quickly and causes a sound like something rattling around inside the engine when you step on the accellerator. Use a fuel octane booster or change the engine timing.

Hydraulic lifter noises sounds more like a tapping sound and is usually caused by inconsistent oil changes

wow -- if your powertrain warranty expires in June then I would be kinda concerned about this problem and maybe take the vehicle down to a different Toyota dealer and have them look at it.
by your description it almost sounds like a valve might need to be adjusted(?),, but it could be something different and more serious.
if you are not happy with the report from the dealer - you can always call Scion direct at (866) -70-Scion,, or (866)-707-2466.
here is also some of the Scion information about a complaint and or warranty problems:

I have a 2002 grand marquis,140 thousand miles...i change my oil on the regular,i take good care of the car..my problem is on my last oil change i noticed a slight tapping noise like the valves where...

a knock sensor is basically a resistor and a spring, and what it does is it reduces valve ping. Valve ping is when the fuel is not properly burned and tries to explode before the valve is fully closed and it will make a pinging noise when under load or at higher RPM. If the sensor is bad it can cause detonation, detonation is when the fuel explodes before the valve is closed and can cause a cracked, or exploded piston, bent valves etc. Your problem does not sound like that of a bad knock sensor, predominantly you will only hear the "ping" under load and not at idle and if it was bad your check engine light should be on. this sounds more like a rod knock. change the oil again and use only AMSOIL and an amsoil filter, amsoil is proven to last longer than any other oil, 600,000 miles without a change, or a filter change.

Loud engine knock sounds like theconnecting rods in a 3.5L v-6 2002 trooper

If the engine knock is coming from deep inside the engine, the I agree, the rod is knocking.
If the sound is coming from closer to the top, it could be a valve lifter or push rod you are hearing. This isn't as bad, they last longer and synthetic oil or oil treatment helps.
If this doesn't happen all the time, if it's occasional or you hear a pinging noise, you could just have a bad knock sensor.

Hi,

Need to know what kind of sound -- loud clunky, rattle, banging, pinging, hard metal, softer, etc., etc...

If it is indeed a bearing related to a piston, this would be a rod bearing, and, yes, that's kinda serious. It'll knock until something comes loose, then the engine is severely damaged.

Noise when i mash the gas in drive at a speed about 40-50 miles

If carb is adjusted properly, try backing your timing off slightly until noise disappears on acceleration , as it sounds like timing "ping"
Other thing that may be causing it is poor octane fuel. You shouldn't have to run premium, so I would check timing & if you don't have a light, just turn distributor a little at a time and test drive it until it's gone.

90 Toyota 4Runner pinging noise

hi the pinging you here is ignition firing before it should but if you have a knocking noise i would suspect the worse but try doing a compression test first see if everything is in order then if this seems ok have you put fuel in it just before it started if so change your fuel if not see if the electrical system has a knock sensor if so run the engine and tap the block close to it see if engine revs drop if not replace but the knock is a piston best of luck yates210456
