Hi! I have a 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix. I love the car, but lately I have noticed a vinegar smell coming from the air vents. It smells if the a/c is on or if it's just the fan blowing in the outside air. It kinda burns your eyes too.
Well there is more to it than that. The smell could be coming from various places, anything from mold or mildew to take out being left or spilled in the vehicle. If it is mold or such Lysol is a good product to disinfect by spraying directly in to fresh air intake. Just make sure to run the air on high without sitting in the vehicle first. If it is something from inside the vehicle, Fa'breeze works wonders. Remember, not all vehicles came with cabin air filters so that's not always an easy fix.

If your vehicle is equipped with a cabin air filter replace it. And to prevent the smell from coming back shut the ac off but leave the blower motor on to dry up the evaporator. Not allowing to dry will result in mold growth
It may be the fuel pressure regulator located on the fuel rail on top of the motor it leaches out a very small amount of gas when they start to go inspect it if it looks even a little bit wet replace it, if this is not wet then the gas cap may not be venting properly replace it.
Check the ac filter, it might be dirty and thats why it is not blowing out enought cold air. The filter is located under the wiper cover but behind the firewall on the passengers side. You access this by lifting the hood and removing the rubber type gasket that holds both together, right on top of the blower unit.
If only the AC indicator light is on but you are still getting warm air from the vents, this is not an issue. Most newer cars run the AC compressor nearly all the time to prevent moisture accumulation inside the car. Without the compressor running, your windows may steam up and hinder your visibility.
linkage inside dash or relay for electric front vents went bad
linkage sometimes comes off its holder from usage this is normal there only held in by a upin under the dash
if electric the relay for the the top vents needs replacing this i believe will be with rest of the relays in engine compartment
