Yes, it starts right up runs, no problems there. There is proper voltage unless you turn on the headlights and if you just turn on the running lights w/out headlights voltage is fine. Just when I turn on the headlights that's when everything else dims and the voltage will drop to the 10's. someone suggested checking the automatic headlight circuit??? do you know where that is???

1989 Cherokee. When I turn on the headlights the charge in the system drops below 10, and takes a while to charge when the lights are turned off. I have a loud squeal coming from the alternator(a bearing I think), but I didn't know if this could be caused by something other than the alternator. Charge also drops significantly when the defrost is engaged. Will changing the alternator alone fix this, or is there something else I must address?

This sounds like you have a bad ground distirbution point is weak and the headlights draw right off this heavily

Probably a stupid question, but does the car start? Have you checked the battery for proper voltage? (and charge rate). Other than that, I'd suspect a poor ground somewhere causing excessive resistance & draw on that system.(headlamps draw far more than dash lights so power is used up there first)

Ground points are generally on the fender near the battery as well as the engine block..secondary at block to firewall. HOWEVER: If the charge rate drops into the 10's with headlights on, this indicates a bad diode in your alternator. (will make the alt undercharge during load)
Charging rate should be between 12.8-13.5 (Depending on battery condition) running wit all accessories off. Definitely should not drop below 12.5 with all accessories on.

Tail lights dont work but the brake lights do

does your car have DRL option (canada) daylight running lights?)
my answer will be, non export jeep. USA jeep, no one ever says !!!!
the tail lamps are not brake lamps.
they are independant.
there are many parking lamps , and the tails are that.
do all parking lamps fail>? see FSM page 8w50-2
the tails run directly to the park headlight switch pin, marked park.
which gets power from fuse 34
the same switch and pin runs all other park lamps and same fuse 34.
so if the fuse is good, then all lamps are burned out , nah.
or the switch is bad, and can due to so many lights for so long.
if lamps are not dim then here is no short, so must be an open
Fuse 34 tops list , use an ohmeter to test the fuse. or replace it
as , they can get hair line cracks. inside fues
0 ohms = good, infinity = bad fuse.

When You Turn On HeadLights All Rear Exterior Lights Such As Brake, TailLights, Parking Lights Wont Work Nor Does Turn Signals Dim Til You Shut Off HeadLights

check your fuses under the steering columb area, and also check fuses and relays, that is located in a power distribution black box under the hood, on the drivers side.

2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee - problem with power windows/locks

This seems to be the affects of a bad dinamo charging your battery . If you take a appart the dinamo you should fine a part called in mechanic terms "the bones" they look like 2 black magnets with a wire coming out of them . They are not expencive and you should not change your dinamo untill you try this first a car dinamo is very expencive .

there is a circuit breaker in your headlight switch so if your tail lights get shorted it wont burn out the wiring. and when these get older they get weak and shut down. just replace your headlight switch and all should be fine if you dont have a short.

Headlights and dash light dont work

You would have to check and see if you are getting any power out of the light switch. There is a seperate wire for the headlights and the dash lights.
