If the car is cold while this happens and you have a rack and pinion steering the seals are bad.
You can try some Lucas brand power steering additive for that available at auto parts stores..

check the condition of the pump drive belt as the cold weather makes it more difficult to flex and if it is worn or loose it may be your problem

What happens if the drive belt breaks

if a drive belt breaks, the debris can interfere with other engine components and do additional damage. rule of thumb belt life is 6yrs or 60000 miles. the belts operate critical engine systems ( alt, water pump, power steering pump) not something to short cut on. belts are noisey when cold due to additional load from battery use when starting or cold fuuids. have belts and tensioners checked for wear and correct operation

I have 2004 ford focus and last night i got stock in the snow. after i got out power steering stoped working!

The snow may have knocked the belt off, on this model car it may only have one belt and if thats the case the battery or alternator light may also come on but is theres two belt then then power steering may be the only belt that came off. Open the hood and take a look at the belts and see if the belt came off, if the belt is still on then you may have broken a power steering line in which the fluid runs out and then you loose the power steering if thats the case dont drive the car to far you could damage the power steering pump. so look around for a belt off and check the power steering fluid, What normally happens is the snow piles up in the belt area and forces the belt off, hope this is helpful, good luck.

Hi

It sounds like the power steering belt has snapped, if this is the case they are pretty cheap and I could see this happening in the cold weather so fingers crossed it is just that alternatively it could be the power steering pump or the power steering rack which are much more expensive.

there the 3 things to check besides the obvios power steering fluid level.

Hope this helps

Power Steering Fluid Filling & Bleeding
  1. Repair the power steering system.
  2. Turn the engine OFF.
  3. Raise the vehicle so the front wheels are off the ground.
  4. Turn the steering wheel all the way to the left.
  5. Fill the power steering fluid reservoir to the FULL/COLD level and leave the cap off.
  6. Have an assistant watch the fluid in the reservoir while you turn the steering wheel fully to the right and fully to the left at least 20 times. NOTE: On systems with long return lines or fluid coolers, turn the steering wheel from lock to lock at least 40 times.
  7. Add fluid as needed to keep the fluid level at the FULL/COLD level.
  8. Install the reservoir cap and start the engine.
  9. Center the front wheels and lower the vehicle.
  10. Run the engine for about 2 minutes.
  11. Turn the steering wheel in both directions and verify correct power steering operation.

Some modern cars have an electrically driven pump to supply high pressure oil to operate the power steering. However, most cars have an oil pump for the steering which is turned by a belt from the crankshaft pulley. If the belt is loose or slipping, heavy steering will be the result, especially noticable at low speeds. Check belt for tightness, and check oil level is not low, possibly due to a leak?

How do i bleed air from power steering pump from 2006 gmc duramax 2500

Routinely, you just jack the vehicle enough to have the tires clear the ground and with the engine on, turn full left till it bottoms out....then turn full right till you bottom it out and then repeat up to ten times.....
