Volvo 940 GL 1995 Soft Turbo

When standstill after a hard drive, my timing does a yo-yo, moving from 10 - 4,000 rpm. at times the engine dies off at the traffic lights & I have to rev up to keep it from dying.
However, after resting for some time, the engine revs are back to normal until another hard run.
I also note that the turbo is of not much help after 80km

First check for holes or disconnected air inlet hoses, that will give the sensor/meter a problem so it cannot send the correct signal.

Volvo 940 se turbo estate 1995 engine cuts out whilst driving will restart in minutes have renewed fuel filter ignition switch fuel pressure ok will be ok for a while then fault returns

I would replace the fuel pump relay, and the engine speed sensor. I would need more information to rule one or the other out, but at this mileage, neither part is terribly expensive, and both have been known to cause your same exact condition

two things to check,,, there is a crank sensor at the back of the engineby the bulkhead,,at the top of the engine where the gearbox joins ,,,the sensors are known to be faulty if sometimes ,,, check the cable to the sensor,,if it is damaged replace the sensor,,,the other common problem is the fuel pump relay,,, behind the fusebox in the dash
