Question about 2003 Saturn ION

My vehicle sometimes will not start but after sitting for 10 minutes will, i suspect a dirty nuetral safety switch as this started happening shortly after the cover by my automatic shifter cracked

problem is, when this happens, motor does not turn over at all. When key is turned, message center displays message about service engine. My key also will not turn all the way off sometimes so I have to jar the tranny into nuetral to get key to turn off. A locksmith cleaned the nuetral safety switch and that helped for a while. That is why I am thinking the switch. I have also heard a thump occasionally from underneath the car when i have restarted vehicle after first failed attempt.

Do some more blogging... This is actually a "security" feature in the ignition switch. If you wait 10 minutes it lets you start it right up.

No you have no problem with the neutral safety switch . This would not let it start at all or it would start all the time . You have a problem with fuel somewhere. try to cycle your ignition switch a few times if it doesnt start on off on off and see if it starts .. if so you might be needing a fuel pump change or fuel filter . thanks Jerry holler if you need further help

you see the ignition switch which is really located on the steering column at the bottom top of it . This neutral safety switch lets the car only start in park or neutral. it sounds like your switch under the dash on the steering column might be the problem the neutral switch lets the ignition switch know when its in neutral or park .But the ignition switch sounds faulty on your car thanks Jerry holler if you need more .

What is a neutral safety switch?

The Neutral Safety switch monitors the position of your gear selector lever and either interrupts or allows the starting circuit in your car or truck to do its job. On newer vehicles it may also monitor the position of the brake pedal to make sure that the vehicle is in park or neutral AND that your foot is on the brake.

If your vehicle is equipped with a neutral safety switch, it should NOT start UNLESS the transmission is in Neutral or Park. On the other hand your vehicle SHOULD start when it is in Neutral or Park. If your car will start in Neutral but not in Park, you have a bad switch. Also, if your car or truck will only start by turning the key to the start position and wiggling the gear selector lever, your neutral safty switch is in need of replacement.

The nuetral safety switch is usually found near the gear shifter. If your car has the gear shift on the column, then the neutral safety switch is usully mounted on the steering column near the brake pedal. On floor mount or console mount vehicles you will find the nuetral safety switch mounted near or on the shifter mechanism.

You can check Edmunds.com for possible recalls. I suspect bad or sticky oil pressure switch. Reason; Oil pressure switch is also a safety that controls your fuel pump. When oil pressure drops like in an accident or rollover, it cuts electric fuel pump off. Have you had it into a dealer for diagnosis??? Another note: when was last "healthy" tune up? Plugs, wires, All fluids & filters including fuel filter? You didn't mention mileage.

Try to start vehicle in park, new battery, alternator, serpentinebelt, dash signals come on,nothing. Try to start in neutral, ok. Try again inpark, nothing, then neutral, nothing? Park safty switch, or...

Try holding the key in the crcnk position while you slowly move the shift lever from park to nuetral and back to park. If at any point the vehicle tries to start while you are doing this than its the nuetral safety switch. From your description it sounds like the nuetral safety is the problem.

My jeep wont start!

MOST LIKELY YOU WILL NEED TO REPLACE THE NUETRAL SAFETY SWITCH IT IS THE MOST COMMON CAUSE OF THIS PROBLEM, IT IS LOCATED ON THE TRANSMISSION CASE UNDER THE ARM THE TRANSMISSION SHIFT CABLE ATTACHES TO, SEE PHOTO BELOW.

I had the same problem with my 1995 Cutlass Supreme. Finally it would not start at all and I noticed the security light on the dash would not go off after I turned the key. It wound up being the ignition switch. I replaced it and no problems. The only trouble is that your old ignition keys do not work with the new switch.
