Jeep belt squeal

I have a 99 cherokee sport 4.0 inline 6. I replaced the serpentine belt. In the defrost modes sometimes there is a loud squeal. I believe this happens when the ac compressor clutch operates. Does the belt tension need to be tighter, or is the clutch malfunctioning ? It always operates in a constant on - off cycle. This is my first jeep after many years of chevys.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Almost always, belt squeal would indicate a loose belt. In some other instances, it would be a worn belt with cracks. Visually inspect the squealing belt and check for wear and tear and/or breaks. If present, replace otherwise, tightening could be accomplished by adjusting the tensioner (wheel) to put more pressure on the belt to tighten it up.

Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

start by tightening the power steering belt if it's separate. If it's one belt alone, tighten or change it if it looks warn. If new breaks squeal it is because the person who changed them did not grease the pads before putting them on.

Take the belt off and see if the A/C pully turns easy by hand. If not then the bearings are going out in the compressor.

Also when the belt is on with the car running look at the belt tensioner and see if its bounces up and down really hard. If it does then the tensioner needs replacing.

Hi!

You can get the belt tightened up or if it still doesn't help then change it and it will surely be fine. Also it is not the clutch malfunctioning

2002 dodge grand caravan sport belt squeals when it rains

The serpentine belt tensioner is a spring loaded device that pulls the right amount of pressure to keep the belt for falling off, as well slipping.

This unit has a short life span, that of the belt, and in most cases it is recommended that it should be replaced at the same time as the belt.

I am 90% sure this is the issue.

I hope this helps

Squealing when start up, battery power goes down when turn on defrost

The squeeeel on startup is a loose serpentine belt.OR a faulty water pump. The voltage drop is a good indictator the belt tensioner may be playing up.The very 1st thing to look at would be the belt. When you put on the defrost, the alt.loads up and would add to the squeel.Hope this helps

Tech says serpentine belt needed to be replaced. after changing the belt 2 more times, still cannot use air conditioner or defrost due to loud squealing from belt and it pulls power down from alternator....

Your vibration damper may be going bad!
It sounds like a belt problem....but isnt load sensitive right? Yeah....that's what they sound like. Especially the part where they squeal on start up.

Have the tensioner replaced too just in case.

My 1999 jeep cherokee belt squeals very loud when giving it gas and chirps a little when idleing

If you get the squealing noise even when car is not running, and if noise get louder when you push the accelerator pedal, then it is the serpentine belt.

You may need to put the belt in tension, or to replace it.

Loud squealing sound in my engine

Try removing the belt and turning each pulley by hand. If everything is smooth and free, with the belt still off, drive down the block once and see if the noise is there (this will eliminate all rotating accessories on the front). If you hear the noise, then there is a problem deeper inside. Oil pressure is good? Dont' forget when doing this, you will have no power steering, so be careful.
