Question about 1990 Dodge Dakota

1 Answer

I am missing a part for my headlight assembly (can't identify)

Well, i'm sure you know that the multifunction switch on the steering column activates the highbeams......well......I just bought this truck, and the highbeams have never worked, but I found the actual activation switch on the bottom ot the steering column under the dash. I am trying to find out what the part is that connects from the multifunction switch by the steering wheel to the secondary switch under the dash to activate the high beams. I am guessing some kind of rod, but no auto parts stores....or shops can tell me..Thanks.

Disconnect battery ground cable.

  1. Remove left lower instrument panel cover, then tape dimmer switch rod to steering column to prevent rod from falling out of notch in actuator lever.
  2. Remove switch to column attaching screws.
  3. Disconnect switch electrical connector, then remove switch from steering column.
  4. Reverse procedure to install. During installation, gently push up on switch to take up slack on rod.

Headlights will not light. All other lights come on when switch is pulled. High beam lights will light if lever is pulled to the rear and held, they do not stay on if lever pushed forward. I have replaced...

Hi Robert,

When you say that you replaced the light switch, were you talking about the MAIN headlamp switch in the dash? or were you refering to the multifunction switch in the steering column? The reason I ask is because this really sounds like a problem with the multifunction switch.
The multifunction switch is not hard to change. Just a cou[ple of screws to remove the plastic shroud around the steering column then remove a couple screws from the switch and disconnect the electrical cnnector.

If this is the switch you already replaced let me know.
It makes a difference whether your T-bird is equipped with automatic or manual headamps. The problem could be different things dependin on which system you have.

I have included the wiring diagrams for BOTH systems in a PDF file for you to download. Just click the link below. This file will only be available for three days, so be sure and save a copy to your computer for future reference.

Let me know if you need further assistance.

LOW BEAMS JUST QUIT HIGH BEAMS WORK

More than likely it is the multifunction switch or combo switch whichever you wish to call it. It is the one that turns the headlights on and the high beams. To gain access to the switch you have to remove the shrouding from around the steering column and there are I believe 3 torx bit screws that hold the switch in place. The switch is the whole assembly that operates the lights. Good luck and let me know how it goes.

How do I replace the signal switch assembly on my 2004 Chevy Cavalier?

Before servicing any electrical component, the ignition key must be in the OFF or LOCK position and all electrical loads must be OFF , unless instructed otherwise in these procedures. If a tool or equipment could easily come in contact with a live exposed electrical terminal, also disconnect the negative battery cable. Failure to follow these precautions may cause personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the steering column trim covers.
  3. Remove the retaining screws from the multifunction switch.

Fig. Remove the multifunction switch (2) from the steering column

  4. Remove the multifunction switch from the steering column.
  5. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the multifunction switch.

To install:
  1. Connect the electrical connectors to the multifunction switch.
  2. Install the multifunction switch to the steering column while depressing the spring loaded horn pin.
NOTE Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
  3. Install the retaining screws to the multifunction switch and tighten the screws to 36 lb inches (4 Nm).
  4. Install the steering column trim covers.
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.
  6. Ensure that the multifunction switch functions properly.
